Lecce,  11th position with 19 points and a negative goal difference of -2

Lecce and AC Milan ended the Serie A Week 18 game with a draw on Saturday 14 January 2023 at the Via del Mare Stadium in Lecce, Italy. Lecce is coming from an excellent moment, a draw and a victory since the restart of the championship. Lecce come from five useful results and the last defeat dates back to the end of October.  AC Milan grabbed only 1 point and not an ideal result.  However, the draw is more like a defeat for Lecce who were leading 2-0.   Napoli’s resounding victory over Juventus gives Milan the opportunity to return to second place alone.

A draw that brings Milan back to second place but that won’t make Pioli’s team happy who see Napoli now move up to +9 in the standings. Lecce, despite the great game, gives themselves a point that takes them to 20 points. Milan managed to recover a match which in the first half saw domination by the hosts who took the double lead after Theo Hernandez’s own goal and Baschirotto’s goal. In the second half the Rossoneri enter the field with another march and also thanks to the physical decline of Lecce they find the equalizer thanks to the goals of Leao and Calabria.

Bad start for the Rossoneri. In the 3rd minute, there is the own goal by Theo Hernández.

Lecce having a ride delighting their fans. In the 23rd minute, bam, there it is! Federico Baschirotto scored with a headed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Morten Hjulmand following a corner conceded by Pierre Kalulu.

AC Milan shortened the distance for the 2-1 in the 58th minute. Forward Rafael Leão defeated Lecce goalkeeper with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner.

AC Milan equalized for the 2-2 in the 70th minute. Captain Davide Calabria scored from very close range with a headed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Olivier Giroud with a headed pass.

✅    Stats before the game. Lecce have won only two of their 32 Serie A matches against Milan (2-1 in 1997 and 1-0 in 2006): 6.3% of successes, the second lowest percentage among the teams they have faced at least 10 times in the competition (6.1 % v Rome). Milan are unbeaten in eight Serie A matches against Lecce (W5 D3), a period in which the Rossoneri scored 20 goals, an average of 2.5 per game. Axel Konan’s 1-0 draw in April 2006 is Lecce’s only success at the Via del Mare against Milan in Serie A: seven Rossoneri wins and eight draws complete the picture at the Apulian home. Lecce are unbeaten in five Serie A matches and have not recorded a longest unbeaten run in the competition since April 2012, under Serse Cosmi in charge – also dating back to 2012 the last run of two games in a row without a goal against reachable after the 0-0 draw against Spezia). Lecce have won their last two Serie A matches played at the Via del Mare and have not achieved three home wins in a row in the top flight since 2004 (six between the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons).
