A thriller game with AS Roma and Napoli ending the Serie A Week 23 with a draw on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium. Roma earns a point, bringing their total to 31, while Napoli, despite not moving up in the standings, holds onto first place with 54 points, three ahead of Inter. The match was played at a thrilling pace, with Napoli initially taking the lead thanks to Spinazzola in the first half. Although the Neapolitans managed to control the game in the second half, Angelino’s stunning finish in the closing moments secured a draw for Roma.

In short, Roma is out of the running for European spots and really needs to turn things around. Meanwhile, Napoli is just three points ahead of Inter, so they’ll be looking to secure a win in this crucial game!

Roma comes into this match with two league wins in a row, while Napoli has been on a roll with seven victories. The first leg saw Napoli take the lead with a 1-0 scoreline. With Atalanta and Inter drawing, Napoli can increase their lead in the standings. They’ll face a determined Roma team that is looking for a win to get back into the European competition.

This is Romelu Lukaku’s 150th Serie A appearance (32 of which came with Roma last season), who has currently scored 79 goals in the competition; among players who made their debut in the three-points-for-a-win era, only eight have managed to score more goals than the Napoli striker in their first 150 games in the tournament: Gonzalo Higuaín (98), David Trézéguet (94), Andriy Shevchenko (90), Hernán Crespo (88), Diego Milito (86), Vincenzo Montella (85), Ciro Immobile (84) and Cristiano Ronaldo (81).

Napoli opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Leonardo Spinazzola found the back of the net with a right-footed shot aimed at the top left corner. The goal was set up by Juan Jesus, who sent Spinazzola racing down the left flank. As he approached Svilar, Spinazzola cleverly deceived him with a gentle lob. Just brilliant!

This match was a thrilling spectacle! In the dying moments, specifically the 92nd minute, Angeliño scored an equalizer for Roma with a brilliant left-footed strike into the bottom right corner. The assist came from Alexis Saelemaekers, who floated a soft ball into the area from the right. Angeliño expertly struck it with the outside of his foot, guiding it past Meret and into the net.

✅  Stats before the game.

Napoli has managed to remain unbeaten in nine out of their last ten Serie A matches against Roma, securing six wins and three draws. The only victory for the Giallorossi during this stretch was on December 23, 2023, where they triumphed 2-0, thanks to goals from Lorenzo Pellegrini and Romelu Lukaku. After enjoying four straight home wins against Napoli, Roma has only claimed two victories in their last eight home encounters with the Partenopei, and they’ve struggled to find the net in three of their last four matches.

Currently, Roma is on a six-game unbeaten run in the league, with four wins and two draws, bouncing back from a tough period where they lost seven out of nine games. If they secure wins against Genoa and Udinese, they could achieve three consecutive Serie A victories for the first time since March 2024, when Daniele De Rossi was coaching. Meanwhile, Napoli is riding high with seven straight wins in Serie A, a feat they’ve only surpassed six times in their history, the last being an eight-game streak from January to February 2023.

Claudio Ranieri, who against Udinese became the 15th coach in Serie A history to reach the milestone of 200 wins (achieved a few hours later by Simone Inzaghi), also became the first coach in the history of the competition to lead a team for at least 10 matches after turning 73 years of age. In fact, none of the players fielded on the final day were born on the day of his first bench in the competition in September 1990.
