Iranian squad details challenges of World Cup build-up during geopolitical tensions

Iran is preparing for the World Cup in unusual circumstances, with the squad training in Turkey while the country is affected by ongoing conflict involving the United States, the tournament’s primary host nation.

Two members of the national team spoke to The Associated Press during a training camp held in Antalya, a coastal resort area in Turkey. Media access to the team’s preparations has been limited, and players have rarely spoken with international journalists.

Several logistical changes have also affected their preparation period. The squad originally planned to train in Tucson, Arizona, but later relocated its base to Tijuana on the Mexican border due to difficulties in processing travel documents.

Players also made trips to Ankara to apply for visas at the US embassy, while Mexico eventually issued the necessary permits, allowing the team to continue their preparations and upcoming travel plans.

Ezatolahi on mental pressure and expectations

Midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi, 29, who is preparing for his third World Cup appearance, said the situation has made preparation difficult while acknowledging that his experience may help him handle the pressure.

He explained, “Well, to be honest, it’s not easy,” and added, “That’s going to be my third World Cup.” So for me and some of the other players, it might be easier to manage these kinds of things,” noting that experience can ease some of the burden.

However, he stressed that external circumstances are still affecting the squad, saying, “But at the end… it is going to be difficult for us because at the same time, we are following the news in our country and the political things, of course, can affect the mind of the players and the people.”

Ezatolahi also pointed to the added expectation from supporters, especially with matches taking place near Los Angeles, where a large Iranian community resides, saying the team hopes to make fans proud despite the pressure.

Ghorbani’s debut World Cup perspective

Mohammad Ghorbani, 24, who is preparing for his first World Cup, described the current situation as challenging but emphasized the need to focus on football responsibilities.

“It’s true that we are facing special circumstances right now, but we are football players, and we have to play, practice, and prepare ourselves for the competitions we have ahead,” he said in Farsi during the interview.

He also referenced difficulties faced by people back home during the conflict, adding that the squad intends to represent their country and aim for positive results that could bring joy to supporters.

Ghorbani said the team is motivated by unity and collective purpose, highlighting that their goal is to deliver happiness to fans through their performances on the global stage.

Travel arrangements, matches and added pressure

Iran’s squad is set to travel to Mexico before the tournament begins after completing their training period in Turkey. They are expected to continue preparations before entering the United States shortly before their opening match.

The team does not need to arrive in the US until 14 June, the day before their first group game against New Zealand, which will be played at the stadium used by the Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood.

Their schedule also includes a second match in Inglewood against Belgium on 21 June, followed by their final Group G fixture in Seattle against Egypt on 26 June.

Ezatolahi noted that playing in Los Angeles, where many members of the Iranian diaspora live, could create a highly charged atmosphere, increasing expectations on the squad while also providing motivation to perform well.

FIFA faces backlash after banning bottles at World Cup venues

FIFA has altered its stadium rules shortly before the start of the tournament, banning fans from bringing in bottles and other similar containers. The decision comes just days before the opening match on 11 June.

The updated policy prohibits reusable bottles, cups, jars, and cans, citing safety concerns. Officials say the change is intended to reduce the risk of objects being thrown inside venues and used as missiles.

This marks a reversal from earlier guidance, which had indicated that empty transparent plastic bottles of up to one litre would be permitted inside stadiums.

Safety rationale and official response

The governing body has said the updated restrictions are part of its broader commitment to safety for everyone attending matches, including players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff.

FIFA stated that drinks will still be available for purchase inside stadiums and added that pricing for water will remain in line with standard venue rates. It also said it is working with host cities and local authorities to provide cooling and hydration support around stadium areas.

These measures include misting stations, shaded spaces, hydration points, and cooling tents positioned outside stadium entrances and surrounding zones.

Health experts’ concerns over overheating

Heat specialists have warned that the decision could increase health risks for spectators, particularly in extreme temperatures expected across many host venues. One expert argued that removing easy access to water could raise the likelihood of heat-related medical incidents.

Concerns have also been raised about existing heat safety plans, which some scientists have previously described as insufficient. Experts say fans may already arrive at stadiums dehydrated after travelling in hot and humid conditions.

A professor of heat and health highlighted that spectators represent a wide range of vulnerability levels, including children, older adults, and people with medical conditions, making them more at risk than elite athletes.

Supporter reactions and wider issues

Supporter groups have criticised the late change in policy, describing it as unexpected after earlier assurances that fans would be allowed to bring bottles and access water freely inside stadiums.

Some fan organisations have questioned whether the move reflects commercial motivations, especially alongside concerns about high ticket prices and transport costs.

Critics have also pointed to wider climate and environmental concerns around the tournament, arguing that the combination of extreme heat risks and reduced hydration access raises questions about organisers’ responsibility for fan welfare.

Scotland’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Squad

Scotland’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Squad

Scotland’s head coach, Steve Clarke, has made it official by announcing his 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Among the chosen players, there are 3 hailing from the Italian Serie A: Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson, Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay, and Torino forward Che Adams.

Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is from June 13 to 24, 2026. This group includes Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland.  The top two teams, and possibly the third-placed team, will move on to the round of 32.

✅   3 Italian Serie A players among the called-ups.

Lewis Ferguson, the midfielder for Bologna, will don shirt No. 20 while representing Scotland. In 2022, Ferguson made a successful transition from Aberdeen to Bologna. He set a new record for the most goals scored by a Scotsman in Serie A, surpassing the legendary Denis Law. The 2023/24 season was particularly remarkable for the midfielder, as he was appointed captain of the club and recognized as Serie A’s midfielder of the year, all while becoming the top scoring Scotsman in Serie A history. In 2025, he made further history by leading the team to a Coppa Italia victory for the first time in 51 years, making him only the second Scottish player to lift the prestigious trophy.

Scott McTominay made the move to Napoli after concluding a seven-year stint with Manchester United on August 30, 2024. On September 26, Scott netted his first goal for Napoli during a 5–0 triumph over their Derby delle Due Sicilie rivals, Palermo, in the Coppa Italia. Amazingly, on October 4, McTominay found the net for his first Serie A goal, scoring just 25 seconds into the match in a 3–1 victory against Como.

On April 27, 2025, he scored both goals in a 2–0 win over Torino, propelling Napoli to the top of the Serie A standings. McTominay’s five league goals in April earned him the title of Serie A Player of the Month, making him the first Scottish player to achieve this honor.  In a magical moment on May 23, McTominay scored Napoli’s opening goal with a spectacular acrobatic kick against Cagliari, leading to a 2–0 victory that secured the club’s fourth Serie A title. He also received the Serie A MVP award for the 2024–25 season and was included in the Serie A Team of the Season, marking a successful first year with the club. Additionally, he earned a nomination for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award due to his outstanding performances throughout the season.

During the 2025-26 Season, McTominay netted the opening goal of the season with a header on 23 August 2025, in the 34th minute against Sassuolo. Two months later, on 25 October 2025, he scored against rivals Inter Milan, helping Napoli secure the top position in the Serie A standings. That goal was subsequently recognized as the Serie A Goal of the Month for October 2025. On 22 December 2025, McTominay contributed to the Napoli squad that triumphed over Bologna with a score of 2–0, clinching the 2025–26 Supercoppa Italiana in Riyadh.

Scott McTominay

Che Adams signed a three-year deal with Torino on July 23, 2024. He made a strong impression during his second Serie A match, assisting Ivan Ilić’s equalizer and scoring the winning goal himself, leading Torino to a 2–1 victory over Atalanta. He concluded his inaugural season in Italy with 10 goals. Adams had a significant impact in Italy, making 69 appearances and netting 15 goals for Torino over his first two seasons.

On the international stage, Adams debuted for Scotland against Austria in March 2021, scoring his first goal just six days later against the Faroe Islands. Three months after his international debut, he was included in Steve Clarke’s squad for the postponed EURO 2020 tournament, participating in all three of Scotland’s group stage matches. In 2024, Adams started in Scotland’s EURO 2024 group stage games against Germany, Switzerland, and Hungary. After netting his first international hat-trick against Liechtenstein in June 2025, the striker featured in all six World Cup qualifiers, helping Scotland qualify for the tournament for the first time since 1998. He scored twice during the campaign, with both goals against Belarus elevating him into the top 20 of Scotland’s all-time goalscorers.

Argentina’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Squad

Argentina’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Squad

Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, has officially announced his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team is determined to defend the title they won at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.  It’s a challenge not met since Brazil successfully retained its title in 1962. Argentina will be competing in Group J, alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.

The squad, known as “La Albiceleste,” includes the legendary Lionel Messi, looking to make history by participating in his sixth World Cup. Among the players, there are two from the Italian Serie A: Inter forward Lautaro Martínez and Como forward Nico Paz.

✅   2 Italian Serie A players among the called-ups.

Inter forward Lautaro Martínez was the top scorer in Serie A, known as “Capocannoniere,” for the 2025-26 season, netting 17 goals and winning this accolade for the second time.   Lautaro serves as the captain of Inter, the reigning champions of Italy. Martínez also led Inter to victory in the Coppa Italia final against Lazio, achieving a domestic double this season. Undoubtedly, Lautaro is a key player for Inter, who will compete in the UEFA Champions League next season. Currently, he ranks as Inter Milan’s third all-time leading goalscorer.

Nico Paz, the 21-year-old forward from Como, is truly living a dream. Under the leadership of manager Cesc Fàbregas, Como 1907 has made history by qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time. The young Argentine attacking midfielder played a crucial role in the club’s remarkable ascent, helping Como finish fourth in Serie A. During the 2025–26 season, Nico Paz scored 12 goals in Serie A, making him the top scorer for his team. Como, who were promoted from Serie B last season, have found their star in Nico Paz.  A standout moment for Paz came on 19 October when he assisted Marc-Oliver Kempf’s opening goal and scored the second goal for his team, leading Como to a victory over Juventus for the first time since 1952.
