Napoli triumphed in the Serie A Week 6 match on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Napoli, Italy. The Azzurri continue their impressive form, marking their third consecutive clean sheet. Not only did they secure a win against Monza, but they also claimed the top position in the league with 13 points for the first time since the last matchday of the Serie A 2022/23 season! It’s hard to believe that it has been 16 months since Napoli last occupied the league’s summit. On the other hand, Monza is having a tough time. They are still on the hunt for their first win of the season.
The outcome of the match between Napoli and Monza was determined in the first half. The Azzurri took the lead with a left-footed strike from Politano and quickly extended their advantage with Kvaratskhelia’s close-range effort following a rebound from McTominay’s shot. In the second half, Monza attempted to push forward and create opportunities, but they struggled to find the finishing touch in the final third, leaving Caprile with little to do. Towards the end, substitutes Neres and Raspadori nearly added to the scoreline.
After a shocking 3-0 defeat to Verona at the Bentegodi, Antonio Conte’s Napoli has rallied with three consecutive wins and a draw against Juventus just a week ago. The Azzurri are firmly back in the Scudetto race and have also moved forward in the Coppa Italia, dominating Palermo with a 5-1 win at the Maradona.
Monza, under the guidance of Alessandro Nesta, is yet to secure their first league win, but they did manage to draw with Inter a couple of weeks ago. The team from Brianza has faced two draws and two losses in the championship, but they have made it to the next round of the Coppa Italia after defeating Brescia 3-1 this week.
The beginning…
Napoli opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, thanks to Matteo Politano, who scored with a left-footed shot right down the middle.

10 – Matteo Politano is one of the only three players to have scored in each of the last 10 Serie A seasons (since 2015/16) with Duván Zapata and Paulo Dybala. Continuity.#NapoliMonza pic.twitter.com/eH3Yv94Gbt

Napoli extended their lead in the 33rd minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia found the back of the net with a right-footed shot aimed at the center. Scott McTominay provided the assist.

✅ Stats before the game:
Napoli have won by scoring exactly four goals in two of their four Serie A matches against Monza; however, they have drawn and lost in the remaining two, without finding the back of the net.
Monza have remained unbeaten in five of their seven away matches against Napoli between Serie A and B (2W, 3D), however the two defeats have come on the only two of these occasions in which the two teams faced each other at the home of the Neapolitans before October: 5-0 in the cadet tournament on 20 September 1964 and 4-0 in the top flight on 21 August 2022.
Napoli have obtained 10 points in the first five matchdays of this championship: with a win against Monza they would rise to 13, a milestone that in the first six games of the season they have reached or exceeded six times in the previous eight Serie A tournaments, more than any other team in the period.
Of the teams currently in Serie A, Monza are the ones who have been waiting for a win for the longest number of league rounds: 14 (D6, L8); the last non-promoted Lombard team to have recorded a longer streak of consecutive matches in the top flight without a win was Atalanta, in 1994 (16).
Napoli have won their first two home league games with Antonio Conte on the bench, who could become the sixth Italian coach to find success in each of the first three home games with the Neapolitans in Serie A, after Paolo Iodice (in 1939), Luis Vinicio (in 1973), Alberto Bigon (in 1989), Carlo Ancelotti (in 2018) and Luciano Spalletti (in 2021).
Monza have drawn in four of their last six league away games (L2), as many times as in the previous 17; in addition, after the 0-0 against Empoli and the 2-2 against Fiorentina, they could draw three away games in a row for the first time in Serie A.
