Braga 1 – 0 Lazio
6′ Ricardo Horta
🏆👉 Lazio lost the UEFA Europa League Matchday 8 against Braga on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at the Estádio Municipal de Braga in Portugal. However, despite the defeat, Lazio secured their spot at the top of the group, allowing them to advance directly to the round of 16, where they’ll meet one of Roma, Plzen, Porto, or Ferencvaros.
Unfortunately for Sporting, today’s result wasn’t enough; they finish with 10 points, tied with PAOK, Twente, Fenerbahce, and Elfsborg, but are eliminated alongside the Swedes due to a poorer goal difference. Horta’s goal gave Braga the edge over a heavily rotated Lazio, but in the second half, Hornicek’s incredible saves were crucial in keeping the Biancocelesti from equalizing. Isaksen, Noslin, and Dele-Bashiru all came close to scoring, but the Czech keeper was on top form. In the final moments, the Portuguese thought they had doubled their lead, but an offside call against Gabri Martinez silenced the celebrations of the red and white fans, as that goal would have secured their playoff spot.

Stats before the game
This will be the first time Braga and Lazio face off against each other. Braga has unfortunately lost their last three home games against Italian sides, despite having a solid start with two wins and a draw in their first three home matches. Lazio, conversely, has had a tough time in Portugal, losing five of their seven away games against Portuguese teams (with two wins), including a 2-1 defeat to Porto in February 2022.
Sporting Braga has lost their last two Europa League matches and hasn’t lost three in a row in this competition since September 2021. In contrast, Lazio has won their last three away games in the Europa League, but they have never managed to secure four consecutive away wins in a major European tournament.

Lazio has triumphed in six out of their seven matches in this Europa League, with one draw. The only times the Biancocelesti have had more victories in a single European competition were during the 1997/98 UEFA Cup (seven wins), the 1999/2000 Champions League (eight wins), and the 2017/18 Europa League (seven wins).
In this tournament, Lazio ranks as the second-best attacking team, having netted 17 goals, just behind Galatasaray’s 18. They also have the second-best defense, allowing only four goals, with Olympiakos conceding just three. With a goal difference of +13, Lazio leads the UEL, while only Chelsea (+21), Barcelona (+15), and Atalanta (+14) have better records when including the UCL and UECL, with Liverpool also at +13.
