🏆👉   Juventus win the UEFA  Europa League Round of 16 against Freiburg on Thursday 9 March 2023 at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, Italy.  The victory is thanks to Ángel Di María’s decisive goal. It is only the second home win in Europe for Juventus after the one against Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League. The game was largely dominated by Juve with important chances in the first half, such as Bremer’s empty net in the first half. The pressure from Allegri’s team grows in the second half where he finds the goal with the usual Di Maria, the fourth consecutive in Europe. Freiburg equalized but was disallowed for a hand ball. Anxiety for the condition of Chiesa, who remained on the pitch with a sore knee as Allegri had finished making substitutions.

The Second Leg will be played on Thursday 16 March in Germany at the Europa-Park Stadion.

It is the first ever meeting between Juventus and Freiburg in a European competition, just as for the Germans it will be the first match against an Italian team.

Juventus opened the score in the 53rd minute. Ángel Di María defeated Freiburg goalkeeper with a headed shot to the high center. The assist is by Filip Kostic.

✅   Stats before the game: The last time Juventus faced a German side in the UEFA Cup/Europa League was in April 1995, with the Old Lady defeating Borussia Dortmund in the 1994-1995 semi-final (4-3 on aggregate). Juventus have gone unbeaten in seven of their last eight meetings against German sides in UEFA competitions (W4, D3), their only defeat in the period coming against Bayern Munich on 16 March 2016 (2-4, after extra time, in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League). Juventus have only lost one of their last 16 matches played in the Europa League (W6, D9); the 3-0 victory against Nantes on the final day was the largest for the Juventus club in the competition.
