Mon 1 July 2024 ‧ UEFA European Championship – Round of 16
France 1 – 0 Belgium
🏆👉 France won the UEFA EURO 2024 Round of 16 defeating Belgium on Monday 1 July 2024 at the Düsseldorf Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany. France qualified to the Quarterfinals thanks to an own goal by Jan Vertonghen. Several Italian Serie A players have been called up by both teams including AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan for France and AS Roma forward Romelu Lukaku for Belgium.
Stats head to head: France and Belgium have played 75 games: France 26 wins, Belgium 30 wins, and 19 draws.
- Belgium reached the knockout stages for the third European Championship in a row, having reached the quarter-finals at both EURO 2016 and EURO 2020. Belgium have won each of their last four round of 16 matches in the majors tournaments (World Cup/EURO), since the defeat against Brazil at the 2002 World Cup (0-2). Will they win again? Will France claim the victory?

What a tough blow for Belgium and a lucky charm for France! In the 85th minute, there is an own goal by Jan Vertonghen who unfortunately deflects Kolo Muani’s shot and puts goalkeeper Casteels out of play gave the lead to France.

✅ Stats before the game: This will be the 76th meeting between France and Belgium. It is the opponent that France has challenged most of all, having faced them almost twice as often as any other team (following the 39 matches against both Italy and Switzerland). On the other hand, Belgium has only faced the Netherlands more often (129 times) than the French. France have won their last four matches against Belgium in a major tournament (World Cup + EURO), scoring 13 goals and conceding just three. Their only precedent at a European Championship dates back to 40 years ago, in 1984: France won 5-0 in the group stage, thanks to Michel Platini’s hat-trick and goals from Alain Giresse and Luis Fernandez, on their way to their first trophy won in the competition. France scored just two goals in the group stage of EURO 2024, the highest number at this stage of a major tournament since the 2010 World Cup (1). The two goals came with an own goal from Austria’s Max Wöber and a penalty from Kylian Mbappé, with 47 shots (excluding the penalty) without scoring. However, the only goal France conceded was from 11 metres, meaning there were a total of 70 unsuccessful shots (excluding penalties) in Les Blues’ matches in the group. France have drawn five of their last six matches at the European Championships (W1), having drawn just four of their previous 25 in the competition (W14, L7). In the round of 16 at EURO 2020, the French drew 3-3 against Switzerland, then lost 5-4 on penalties.
