Getting to know our players in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It’s time to meet Italy first goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Gianluigi Buffon was born on 28th January 1978 in Carrara, Italy. Buffon not only is Juventus Captain, but also is Italy team Captain! Buffon reaching a record of fifth World Cup finals call up.  Buffon playing the fourth World Cup as Italy first goalkeeper.

Buffon made his Serie A debut for Parma  against AC Milan on 19 November 1995, aged 17, keeping a home clean sheet 0-0.  Buffon  won the UEFA CUP with Parma in 1999, along with the Italian Cup and the Italian Supercup.  Buffon moved to Juventus in 2001.   Buffon has won 5 Serie A and 4 Italian Super Cups with Juventus.

Buffon won the U21 European Championship title with Italy in 1996, and the Mediterranean Games title in 1997. He made his senior national team debut under Italy Head Coach Cesare Maldini on 29 October 1997, in the 1-1 draw against Russia in the FIFA World Cup 1998 playoff first leg.  Buffon won the 2006 FIFA World Cup and took part in all major tournaments since then, from UEFA Euro 2008 to the Confederation Cup 2013.  Currently, Buffon is the captain of Italy national team.

Personal Life

Gianluigi Buffon following a sporting life just like his  parents.  His mother, Maria Stella, was a discus thrower and his father, Adriano, was a weightlifter.  Moreover, Buffon’s two sisters, Veronica and Guendalina, played volleyball for the Italian National Volleyball Team.   Buffon’s  uncle, Dante Masocco, was a basketball player in Serie A1, who also represented the National Team.  Former Inter, Milan and Italy legendary goalkeeper Lorenzo Buffon is also a cousin of Gianluigi Buffon’s grandfather.

Buffon has been married to Czech model Alena Šeredová since June 2011, although they had been in a relationship together since 2005. They have two children, Louis Thomas born in 2007  and David Lee borin in 2009.   In May 2014, Buffon announced  his separation after three years of marriage.
