🏆👉 Argentina won the FIFA World Cup Group C defeating Mexico on Saturday 26 November 2022 at the Lusail National Stadium in Lusail, Qatar. Following a 2-1 defeat by Saudi Arabia, Argentina finally won their first game and grab the much-needed 3 points to keep hope alive for qualification to the Round of 16.  The Argentinian number 10 “Lionel Messi” unlocks the result with a feat in the 64th minute of the game: a dry and precise shot from the edge of the penalty area that leaves no way out for Ochoa and allows his team to unlock a complicated and up to that moment game without emotions. Enzo Fernandez also doubled his lead in the 87th minute to secure the victory. Argentina is back in the running, taking second place in the standings behind Poland, their next opponent on the third and decisive day.

Lionel Messi continues to rewrite the history of Argentine football and, despite himself, to retrace the footsteps of the great Diego Armando Maradona. Messi equaled two other records with the Pibe de Oro: 21 appearances in the World Cup and 8 goals scored. Just like Maradona, a bit of a ghost, who maybe from now on will hover a little less on his shoulders.

Loss to Saudi Arabia in the previous match ended Argentina’s run of 13 consecutive World Cup victories against non-European nations, since its match against Cameroon in 1990. After drawing their opening game 0-0 with Poland, Mexico missed out on winning both of their first two matches of a World Cup for the first time since 1978, when they lost all three of their group stage matches.

Andrés Guardado is just the sixth player to feature at five different World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022), as well as the third Mexican to do so, after Antonio Carbajal and Rafael Márquez.

✅ Stats before the game. Argentina have gone unbeaten in their last 10 meetings with Mexico in all competitions (W7 D3), following a 1-0 defeat in the 2004 Copa América. Mexico has always lost in their three World Cup matches against Argentina: 6-3 in 1930, 2-1 in 2006 and 3-1 in 2010. Only Austria (4 against Italy) and Nigeria (5 against Argentina) have faced an opponent several times in the competition and always lost. Argentina have lost four of their last six World Cup matches (W1, D1), as many as they have lost in their previous 25 in the competition (W16, D5). In more detail, Albiceleste have lost their last two games in the tournament, only between 1930 and 1958 they recorded three defeats in a row in the World Cup. Mexico have not scored in their last three World Cup matches and have never recorded four consecutive clean sheets in the tournament, with this being their 59th World Cup match.

🏆👉 Lineup ARGENTINA (4-3-3): Emiliano Martínez; Gonzalo Montiel, Nicolás Otamendi, Lisandro Martínez, Marcos Acuña; Guido Rodríguez, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister; Lionel Messi, Ángel Di María and Lautaro Martínez.

🏆👉 Lineup MEXICO (5-3-2): Ochoa; Araujo, Montes, Moreno, Gallardo, Alvarez; Herrera, Chavez, Guardado; Vega, Lozano
