After their excellent win over Belgium, the Italy team returned to Montpellier during the night on a specially chartered flight that took off from Lyon airport at 02:00. Antonio Conte and captain Gianluigi Buffon stopped to sign some autographs for fans who had waited for the team outside their hotel. The squad took part in one training session today starting at 11:45.

Conte and his players were even praised by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi for their victory and were hailed by FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio. “It was a commanding display”, said Tavecchio to the ‘Radio anch’io lo sport’ programme, “We played and won like a great team. The celebrations are over because we’re already thinking about the next game”. The FIGC chief had special praise for Antonio Conte, saying “He’s in the process of doing something extraordinary. The lads are fantastic because they train and day after day they show that they share important values.  We were very satisfied with winning our first match against a much-fancied Belgium side. There’s a long way to go but I believe that a lot of people will start believing in us again after all the negative talk before kick-off.”

There was also time to thank all the Italian supporters who packed into the Stade des Lumières yesterday and roared the team on from the first minute to the last. They helped create a raucous but respectful atmosphere with their Belgian counterparts: “I’d like to once more emphasise the excellent behaviour of our fans both inside and outside the stadium. They supported us all night and I thank them for that. We showed that we’re a civilised country and that we can conduct ourselves properly. It was a model of good behaviour and civility.”
