🏆👉  What a rough day! Italy was defeated in the first leg of the UEFA Nations League Quarterfinals on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the San Siro Stadium in Milan. Germany came from behind to win 2-1, with Tim Kleindienst and Leon Goretzka scoring, while Sandro Tonali netted for Italy.

Previous the match, Italy have not beaten Germany in six official matches, with two defeats and four draws in the process.  The last Azzurri success against the Germans dates back to 28 June 2012, with the 2-1 in the semi-final of EURO 2012 scored by Mario Balotelli.

Here’s the current scenario: For Italy to progress to the next round, they must secure a two-goal victory in the Second Leg match scheduled for the evening of Sunday, March 23, in Dortmund.

The match saw its first goal in the 10th minute when Sandro Tonali found the back of an empty net, assisted by Politano. Although Germany controlled much of the game, Italy created the better opportunities in the first half.

Right after the second half began, the visitors equalized with a header from Kleindienst, who had just entered the game. They then took the lead in the 76th minute with a goal from Goretzka following a corner. The Azzurri struggled to respond and also faced a setback with Calafiori getting injured late in the match.

Italy took the lead early in the 9th minute when Sandro Tonali found the back of the net with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. Bastoni made a swift pass from the left to the right side of the pitch, allowing Barella to step in, receive the ball, and pass it to Politano. The Napoli winger then nudged the ball toward the center, catching Baumann off guard, and Tonali finished it off by scoring into an open net at the right post.

Germany equalized in the 49th minute for the 1-1. Tim Kleindienst scored with a headed shot from the center to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Joshua Kimmich.

Regrettably, Germany took the advantage in the 76th minute when Leon Goretzka scored with a header into the bottom right corner. Joshua Kimmich provided the assist with a cross following a corner that Giovanni Di Lorenzo conceded. Kimmich’s corner from the left was met by Goretzka, who headed the ball to the opposite post.
