Scott McTominay back in Napoli training following heart procedure

Scott McTominay has resumed training with Napoli after having an operation to fix an irregular heartbeat.

The Scotland midfielder underwent an ablation procedure in Manchester last month, and the minimally invasive surgery was deemed a complete success. During his recovery, he trained away from his Napoli teammates.

Scott McTominay given green light to play

Napoli confirmed that McTominay had further diagnostic tests on Wednesday, and the results indicated that the 29-year-old is fit to play.

The club stated that the midfielder has therefore returned to training with the rest of the squad after his period of working separately.

McTominay’s heart issue came to light after he was substituted in the 56th minute of Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A loss to Como in August. A mild benign arrhythmia was detected, which led to the decision to perform corrective treatment.

Heart surgery addressed irregular rhythm

An arrhythmia happens when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or without a steady rhythm. McTominay’s ablation procedure was carried out to treat the condition.

The treatment uses heat or cold energy to create tiny scars in the heart. These scars block abnormal electrical signals and are meant to restore a normal heartbeat.

Scotland missed McTominay while he was out

McTominay’s recovery also caused him to miss four Scotland matches, including Tuesday’s Nations League defeat to Slovenia.

His return to training with Napoli comes as Scotland gets ready for their next fixtures. The Scots are set to play Switzerland and North Macedonia in November.
