🏆👉   Mission accomplished!  Inter won the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, First Leg game defeating Atletico Madrid on Tuesday 20 February 2024 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, Italy. This is  Inter’s first knockout match in the Champions League against a Spanish team since the 2009-10 semi-final, when, with José Mourinho at the helm, the Nerazzurri eliminated Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona (3-2 aggregate score).

⚫🔵 Inter arrives at the match against Atletico Madrid, strong in first place in the Serie A and in 2024 in which they have won all the matches played (eight) in all competitions, including the decisive one to win the Italian Super Cup. Simone Inzaghi’s team had finished their Champions League group in second place, behind Real Sociedad, due to a worse goal difference than the Spaniards.

Inter opened the score in the 79th minute. It is Marko Arnautović to score thanks to a mistake between Reinildo and De Paul which opens the way for Lautaro, who kicks at Oblak. The ball ends up in Arnautovic’s area, who repeats it on goal, despite Lino’s saving attempt. GOOALLL


✅ Stats before the game: The only precedent between Inter and Atlético Madrid dates back to the 2010 European Super Cup, won 2-0 by the Spaniards thanks to goals from Jose Antonio Reyes and Sergio Agüero. With Diego Simeone at the helm, Atlético Madrid have won five of their six knockout matches in European competitions against Italian opposition. However, the most recent of these ended with a 0-3 defeat at Juventus in the round of 16 of the 2018-19 Champions League – a result which eliminated them from that tournament (after the 2-0 gone).  Atlético Madrid have won only five of their 18 away games against Italian teams in European competitions (D4, L9), however the Colchoneros have won both matches against these opponents at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium (1-0 in 2014 and 2-1 in 2021 , again against Milan). Inter have lost just one of their last 13 Champions League matches (W7, D5): in last season’s final against Manchester City. The Nerazzurri kept a clean sheet in 62% of their matches in the period (8/13), conceding just nine goals.
