Inter with a sprint race won the UEFA Champions League Group Stage – Group D on Wednesday 8 November 2023 at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.  Inter qualified to the Round of 16 with two days to spare. Now Inter will compete for first place with Real Sociedad. Nothing to do for Salzburg who will now compete for access to the Europa League with Benfica.

After a blocked first half which the Nerazzurri finished with a crescendo, in the second half Inzaghi’s team controlled the game and created more dangerous opportunities. The decisive goal was scored by the usual Lautaro Martinez, who came on in the second half and coolly scored the winning penalty five minutes from the 90th minute after a handball from Mads Bidstrup on Nicolò Barella’s shot.

Inter opened the score in the 86th minute. Argentinean forward Lautaro Martínez converted a penalty defeating Salzburg goalkeeper Alexander Schlager with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner. The penalty is conceded by Mads Bidstrup following a handball.

✅ Stats before the game: Inter have won all three meetings with Salzburg in European competitions: 1-0 success in both the first leg and the second leg in the 1994 UEFA Cup final and 2-1 in the most recent Champions League match. Salzburg have lost only one of their last seven home matches against Italian teams in European competitions (W4, D2) and have already beaten Italian opposition at home in 2023 (1-0 against Roma in the Europa League). However, they have never won in their three home matches against these teams in the Champions League (D1, D2). After winning the first match of this edition of the Champions League (2-0 vs Benfica), Salzburg lost their last two matches in the tournament. Should they lose this match, they will equal their longest losing streak in the competition, which dates back to November 2020 with Jesse Marsch in charge (three matches). Inter have remained unbeaten in their last four away matches in the Champions League (W2, D2) and could record a run of five away matches in a row without defeat in the competition for the first time since February 2005 (one match with Alberto Zaccheroni and four with Roberto Mancini).

🏆 👉 Lineup  RB SALZBURG (4–4-2): Schlager; Dedic, Baidoo, Pavlovic, Ulmer; Sucic, Bidstrup, Capaldo, Gloukh; Simic, Konaté.

🏆 👉 Lineup INTER (3-5-2):  Sommer; Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Frattesi, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Carlos Augusto; Sanchez, Thuram
