Kovacic: “Happy to play whenever and wherever the gaffer needs me”

SAINT-ETIENNE – Sitting alongside Walter Mazzarri at this evening’s press conference to preview the Europa League clash with Saint-Etienne tomorrow, Mateo Kovacic fielded a number of questions from the reporters present.

It was put to the young midfielder that he’s been playing a lot of games recently. He replied: “That’s not a problem. We have lots of players out injured right now. The gaffer wanted to give me a bit of a rest but it’s not an option at the moment.”

Quizzed about his possible contract renewal, the Croat explained: “It’s too early for that. I still have a few years left on my current deal. Now’s not the time to be talking about it.”

The 20-year-old then replied to a question about his preferred position. “It depends on the game. Against Sampdoria and Parma I was up in the hole. I enjoy playing in a deeper midfield role too but I’m quite happy to adapt to playing wherever the gaffer wants to put me.”
