Here’s to the world champions!

MILAN – 50 years on. Memories flood back of the exact the moment that Inter were on top of the world for the first time. President Angelo Moratti, Helenio Herrera and their players, who have since become legends, brought home the big one from Madrid.

Inter became the first Italian side in history to win the Intercontinental Cup and captain Armando Picchi had the honour of lifting it to the sky.

After the defeat in Buenos Aires on 9 September 1964 to a solitary goal from Rodriguez, the Nerazzurri won 2-0 at the Meazza a fortnight later with Mazzola and Corso on the scoresheet.

With the aggregate score being level the tie went to a replay. In extra time, Corso’s divine left boot secured the trophy on neutral ground at Madrid’s Bernabeu.

We remember that side today because supporting a club is not just about the here and now. It’s about the past and the future too. Which is why we would like to say, “Here’s to the world champions!”
