Garcia: “It will be tough but we’ll do everything to win”

ABSENTEES
“Torosidis and Pjanic are doing well, Florenzi’s in the squad: we’ll
see where they are tomorrow. Gervinho’s fit too.  Dodô, Maicon,
Balzaretti and Totti are all out. Everyone else is fine. The Inter game
will be a tricky like every other match, as Napoli will be and Bologna
were before that. The Nerazzurri are a good team but we’ll do everything
we can to win it.”

CLOSED CURVAS
“As I’ve said, I don’t think it’s an issue to have empty seats in the
short term: we need to adopt the same approach we showed against
Sampdoria, we need to think about our play and try to win for our fans
who won’t be at the stadium. It could become a problem over the long
term though. The supporters need to adapt to the rules. The fact is
these laws are too open to interpretation. So you risk punishing some
and not others.”

FUTURE
“It’s good news for us that Sabatini has signed a new deal: he’s a
consummate professional, he’s done a great job and I’m happy he’ll be
with us for a long time. The stadium? The Americans immediately realized
that it’s not possible to share a ground with another team. Although
the Olimpico is a great stadium, it’s not football-specific and hosts
lots of other events.”

REFEREES
“I read and heard a lot of different things about officials over the
week. I don’t there’s anything left to add: people have talked about
Curvas and referees, but I hope that in future we can talk a lot more
about football, tactics and formations. I expect great Italian football
and for people to talk more about what’s happening on the field. I want
to focus on tomorrow’s match and how we’re going to set up. My players
are experienced and know that the priority is to give everything on the
field.”

SOLUTIONS
“All we can do is play our best to win tomorrow. The broadest question
is something which is closely related to the club, Lega and federation. A
foreigner like me can’t change things in Italy. I expect there to be an
improvement, but that’s not my problem. The only thing is that we’re
playing in a half-empty Olimpico tomorrow and I don’t like that. If the
law remains the same between now and the end of the season, the fans
will need to adapt.”

OPPONENTS
“We don’t play during the week, while our rivals at the top have done.
Fiorentina and Juventus will meet in the Europa League and we’ll see
what happens. We’re thinking about our schedule. First and foremost we
need to beat a top side like Inter: they’ve got good players and a good
coach. We need to overcome all these difficulties and win the match.
Mazzarri has always got results and his teams play effective football.
But the most important thing is how Roma play. We need to counter attack
well and be solid at the back. We need eleven players giving it their
all when it comes to defending. We need to do everything we can and
that’s how we can take home the three points.”

DEFENSE
“Inter defend with five at the back, even though their wing-backs get
forward a lot: you often see them getting crosses in. It’s hard to find
teams that play three at the back: you barely ever see a third center
back who moves out wide to defend on the flank. There are pros and cons
to it like every formation. We need to exploit their weak points and
hope that their strengths don’t cause us too much damage.”

TECHNOLOGY
“I’m in favour of technology. Those watching on TV have a dozen
replays, while the referees don’t get any. It would be nice to help them
with technology to know whether or not the ball crossed the line, or
whether a foul took place inside or outside the area. That’s how we can
help them, at least to start with. FIFA are currently running tests on
this. From a financial perspective it’s very important to support teams:
a goal for or against can change your league position, a match or
whether or not you achieve a target at the end of the season.”

CONDITIONS
“After the Coppa Italia we noticed a lack of efficiency both
offensively and defensively. We’ve shown over the course of the season
that we’re good at both phases. The players are strong psychologically
and they know what they need to give on the field. I think it’s easier
to win games if you play good football. Sometimes you can still come
away with the points despite suffering and playing a less flamboyant
style.”

PJANIC
“When a player has a recurring injury and is close to full fitness he’s
alright to play. But obviously, I prefer not to take risks where
possible. It would be nice for him to come through this as De Rossi did,
who is now back to 100%. We hope to see the same Miralem that played
against Sampdoria.”

TOTTI
“Francesco is better: his problem is gradually starting to subside.
He’s not yet ready to play and help the team tomorrow but we hope
there’ll be nothing stopping him from playing against Napoli in eight
days’ time.”

TOLOI
“When he first joined we played five games in fifteen days and he had
the flu. He’s now 100%, has had a good week in training and I’m sure
he’ll be ready when we call on him.”
