🏆👉 Argentina win the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 against Australia on Saturday 3 December 2022 at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium (Al-Rayyan) in Al Rayyan, Qatar. For Argentina, now, the Quarter-final against the Netherlands.   Argentina delighted millions of fans worldwide. The victory thanks to the goals by Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez. Argentina continue their adventure. Australia salute this World Cup playing with determination but not enough to win. The honor goal for Australia was scored by Craig Goodwin.

Argentina-Australia is also a very special match for Lionel Messi. Messi crosses the finish line of 1,000 matches as a professional footballer. For him, it is match number 169 with the Seleccion shirt – of which he has long held the absolute record – to which are added the 778 matches played with Barcelona and 53 with Paris Saint-Germain. The matches played with Barça B and those with Argentina’s national youth teams, including the Olimpica team, are excluded from the count.

Argentina scored again. Julián Álvarez scored in the 57th minute with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner.

Australia shortened the distance in the 77th minute. Craig Goodwin defeated Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez with a left footed shot to the bottom right corner.

✅     Stats before the game. This is Argentina’s first meeting with Australia since September 2007 friendly, which Argentina won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Martin Demichelis. It is also the first-ever World Cup crossing between these two national teams. Australia’s only win against Argentina in seven games (D1 L5) came in July 1988 in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup: 4-1 with goals from Paul Wade, Charlie Yankos (2), and Vlado Bozinoski. Current manager Graham Arnold also played in that game for the Socceroos. This will be Australia’s fifth World Cup match against South American opponents – the Socceroos have never won in the previous four (D1 L3). Argentina’s only precedents with a team from Oceania concern the seven matches against Australia, none of which was as said at the World Cup.  Argentina was eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup, losing to eventual winners France. The South American national team has never gone out before the quarter-finals in two consecutive World Cups since the round of 16 was introduced in 1986; the last time Seleccion went out before the quarter-finals in two consecutive World Cups was in 1958-1962 (eliminated in the first round of the groups both times).

🏆👉 Lineup ARGENTINA (4-3-3): Dibu Martinez; Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Acuna; De Paul, Enzo Fernandez, Mac Allister; Messi, Julian Alvarez, Papu Gomez.

🏆👉 Lineup  AUSTRALIA (4-4-2): Ryan; Degenek, Souttar, Rowles, Behich; Leckie, Irvine, Mooy, Baccus; Duke, McGree.
