Erick Thohir at the Stadio Meazza

MILAN – FC Internazionale president Erick Thohir arrived in Milan yesterday and will stay in the city long enough to watch his side play two games at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, against Atalanta and Cagliari. In the run-up to today’s match, Thohir found time to speak to various broadcasters, including Inter Channel.

Asked about sporting director Piero Ausilio’s new contract, Thohir said: “We’ve shown that we believe in the project we started last year. We’ve had to face up to many challenges, such as building a team at the same time as creating more revenue and adhering to Financial Fair Play. Ausilio has proven that he can build a good team and we are starting to see the results of his fine work.”

Thohir also gave his view on tonight’s match: “We expect three points every time we play at home. We now have a run of three consecutive home matches, but they certainly won’t be easy. Just look at Atalanta, for example – we’ve not beaten them here at the Meazza since 2010.

It’s been very important to get points on the board in our first three games, despite the fact that all of them have been tough in their own way. The Palermo match was tricky because we had played in Kiev and the heat was a factor, too. We also had to accept refereeing decisions that didn’t go our way in Sicily,” he continued.

The Inter president was in positive mood when asked about his team’s start to the season: “Obviously, we can play better than we have done in the first three games, but one win and two draws is not a bad start. We are convinced that we can compete, although there are no easy games in Serie A.

Tonight’s match is important because Palacio is returning and he gives us an extra option in attack – he was one of the best forwards in the league last season. If he carries that form into this term, I think that together with Icardi and Osvaldo we have the necessary firepower to challenge near the top of the table,” he concluded.
