🇮🇹 AC Milan defeated Monza in the Serie A Week 38 match on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. Monza has already been relegated to Serie B for the next season, sitting at the bottom of the table. A disappointing season wraps up for AC Milan, who will miss out on European Cups next year. This is the first time since the 2019-2020 season that this has occurred, although back then it was due to their expulsion from the Cups for not adhering to Financial Fair Play regulations.
The stakes are high for Milan. Perhaps this will be a season of renewal for them, as they focus solely on the league. Similar to Napoli, who took advantage of this situation to triumph over Inter in the Scudetto race.
In the 64th minute, Milan took the lead. Matteo Gabbia found the net with a header directed to the bottom right corner. The assist came from Samuel Chukwueze, who delivered a cross after a corner was conceded by Pedro Pereira. From the corner taken by Chukwueze, Gabbia’s header managed to beat Pizzignacco at the near post. This gives the Rossoneri a well-deserved advantage.

1 – Prior to João Félix, the last AC Milan’s player to score by a direct free kick in Serie A was Junior Messias on 3rd May 2023 v Cremonese. João Félix also scored his first goal by a direct free kick in the Big-5 European leagues. Free-Kick.#MilanMonza

Stats before the game
There have been no ties between Milan and Monza in Serie A, with the Rossoneri securing four victories and the Brianza team one; these five encounters have also averaged 3.2 goals per match. The two matches held at San Siro between Milan and Monza resulted in the Rossoneri triumphing with a combined score of 7-1; the Brianza teams have only allowed more away goals in Serie A against Atalanta (10) and Roma (eight).
Milan has experienced 16 losses in the 2024/25 season across all competitions. Only in three seasons have the Rossoneri faced more defeats in official matches since 1929/30: those seasons are 2013/14, 1996/97, and 1973/74, with each having 17 losses.
In this championship, Milan has secured eight home victories (7 draws, 3 losses). Over the last 20 seasons, since Serie A returned to 20 teams in 2004/05, they have only failed to achieve at least nine home wins twice: in 2007/08 and 2020/21, where they managed eight wins in both instances.
Should Monza lose, they would conclude this championship with 18 points in the standings. In the era of three points for a win, only four teams have ended a Serie A season with fewer points: Brescia with 12 in 1994/95, Napoli with 14 in 1997/98, Ancona with 13 in 2003/04, and Salernitana with 17 in 2023/24.
Player Stats
Monza is one of the two teams, alongside Empoli, against which Tijjani Reijnders has scored more than once in Serie A (two goals each); with 10 goals and four assists, the Dutch player could be the first central midfielder for Milan to achieve at least 15 active contributions in a season since Franck Kessie in 2020/21 (17).
If Christian Pulisic scores, he will match his personal best for goals in a season within the Big-5 European leagues (12 with Milan in 2023/24). Additionally, with one more active participation, he would set a new personal record in these competitions: 20 contributions in Serie A 2024/25 (11 goals and 9 assists), similar to his last season’s performance (12 goals and 8 assists).
Gianluca Caprari has contributed to a goal in each of his last two Serie A matches (one goal and one assist) and has not had three consecutive games with active involvement in the league since his time with Hellas Verona between January and February 2022, when he had a streak of four consecutive games.
