River Plagte managed to secure a 0-0 draw against Monterrey during their Group E match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Saturday, June 21, 2025. This result keeps both teams’ hopes alive for advancing to the knockout stages.
Goalkeeper Esteban Andrada made crucial saves in the second half from Franco Mastantuono and Miguel Borja, ensuring Monterrey earned a point after their earlier draw with Inter Milan on Tuesday.
In injury time, River Plate’s Kevin Castaño received a red card for a second yellow, as his team matched the Italians with four points at the top of the table. Monterrey trails River by two points.
Sergio Canales made a run from the halfway line, but River Plate’s Franco Armani was able to save his shot to the right. Gerardo Arteaga then missed the target after the ball came to him on the edge of the area.
River Plate ended the match with fewer players. In the 91st minute, Mastantuono Castaño fouled Nelson Deossa while trying to initiate a late counterattack, resulting in his second booking and subsequent dismissal.
Next, River Plate will face Inter Milan in Seattle on Wednesday, while Monterrey will play against the already-eliminated Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan at the Rose Bowl.
