Inter Milan lost to Fluminense in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.  The Club World Cup has come to an end for Inter, as they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Portaluppi’s Fluminense. Cano scored in the 3rd minute of the first half, and Hercules added another in the 96th minute of the second half, sealing the match. This result is a significant disappointment for both the team and their supporters.

Previously, Inter Milan secured the top position in Group E after defeating River Plate 2-0 in a thrilling match.   Their upcoming clash with Fluminense promises to be just as intense in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup. This matchup marks the first competitive meeting between these two teams. Inter Milan led Group E, while Fluminense came in second in Group F, setting the stage for another exciting cross-continental showdown in the knockout phase.

A rough beginning for Inter. Fluminense takes the lead just 3 minutes in. Germán Cano nets the goal with a close-range header to the bottom right corner that puts Fluminense ahead. Darmian’s error leaves the Argentine striker unmarked.

In the 39th minute, Ignacio managed to get past goalkeeper Sommer. However, the offside call from the VAR nullified the Brazilians’ 2-0 lead. Therefore, the score stays at 1-0.

A very unsportsmanlike act occurs on the field. Henrikh Mkhitaryan snatches the ball from Renato Portaluppi, who had halted it to stop Inter from executing the free kick immediately. Mkhitaryan becomes agitated and bumps into the Brazilian coach, who then shoves the player back. Portaluppi receives a yellow card following a near altercation between the Fluminense bench and the Nerazzurri players.

Fluminense clinched the win in the 93rd minute. Darmian allows the ball to go by, which the Brazilian picks up. Hércules netted a goal with a left-footed strike into the bottom right corner.
