Coppa Italia background

The Coppa Italia is Italy’s premier domestic cup competition. It was managed by the DDS and Lega Calcio until the 2009-10 season, and since then, it has been overseen by Lega Serie A. Due to sponsorship, it is now officially known as Coppa Italia Frecciarossa.

Juventus holds the record for the most titles, with fifteen victories, while Roma and Inter Milan follow closely with nine each.  Moreover, Juventus has also appeared in the most finals, totaling 22, with Roma at 17.

 What’s the Coppa Italia deal? 

The reigning champion is allowed to wear a cockade of Italy, similar to the roundels seen on military aircraft.  In addition, the Coppa Italia winner secures a spot in both the UEFA Europa League and the Supercoppa Italiana for the next year.   Superb!  Currently, Juventus is the champion for the 2023-24 season.

Now, let’s kick off the excitement and enjoy the matches! The first round of the 2024-25 Coppa Italia begins on Friday, August 8, 2024, featuring matches like Udinese vs. Avellino, Genoa vs. Reggiana, Sassuolo vs. Cittadella, and Monza vs. Sudtirol.

This season brings some format changes. For instance, if a match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, it will go straight to a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner.

The first round continues on Saturday with matches such as Napoli vs. Modena and Verona vs. Cesena, followed by Parma vs. Palermo, Torino vs. Cosenza, and Sampdoria vs. Como on Sunday.

The round wraps up on Monday with exciting games like Lecce vs. Mantova and Cagliari vs. Carrarese.
