🏆👉 Italy concluded the Nations League group stage with a 3-1 loss on November 17, 2024, at the San Siro Stadium in Milan. Adrien Rabiot’s two goals and an own goal by Guglielmo Vicario were pivotal in the match, while Andra Cambiaso scored Italy’s consolation goal. Despite the defeat, Italy advanced to the quarter-finals as runners-up, sharing points with France, who led the group due to a better goal difference.

The game kicked off with France scoring in the second minute, Rabiot heading in from a corner taken by Luca Digne. Later, in the 33rd minute, Digne’s free kick hit the crossbar and bounced off Vicario into the goal. Italy pulled one back with Cambiaso’s goal, set up by Dimarco’s cross. However, Rabiot struck again in the 65th minute, heading in another corner from Digne. In the final moments, Kean had a chance to score again for Italy, but Maignan’s excellent save kept the score at 3-1.

This match will be the 41st between the two sides, with Italy leading the series with 19 wins, while France has 11, and there have been 10 draws. Italy has recorded more victories (29) and goals (111) against Switzerland than against France, where they have 19 wins and 85 goals.

Here is the situation:

The first two teams will qualify for the quarterfinals. The team that finishes in third place will enter a play-off to avoid being relegated, facing off against one of the second-placed teams from League B, while the fourth-placed team will drop down to League B.

The match

Not the ideal kickoff for the Italian team, as France took an early lead with a quick goal in the 2nd minute. Adrien Rabiot scored from close range with a header that went into the top right corner. Lucas Digne set him up with a cross following a corner given away by Andrea Cambiaso. Digne’s corner from the left was aimed right into the box, and Rabiot managed to head it into the net on the right, rendering Dimarco’s attempt to clear it useless.

What a stroke of luck! Ouch! In the 33rd minute, Italy’s goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario accidentally scores an own goal, putting France ahead 0-2. Digne executed a fantastic free kick, sending the ball over the wall, hitting the crossbar, and then bouncing off Vicario’s back into the net.

Now we’re really in the game! The Azzurri responded brilliantly. Italy pulled one back in the 35th minute when Andrea Cambiaso scored with a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner, outsmarting France’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Federico Dimarco provided the assist. Dimarco and Tonali linked up on the left, and after Dimarco crossed from the byline, Frattesi missed the header, but Cambiaso was there to strike first time, finding the net past Maignan on the left.

Oh, come on, not this again! In the 65th minute, Adrien Rabiot scores, giving France a 1-3 advantage with a header that goes straight to the top right corner. The assist came from Lucas Digne. Digne sent a gentle ball into the box, and Rabiot skillfully headed it into the far corner.

Stats before the game

Excluding friendly matches, Italy has won their last two official encounters with France, 2-0 at EURO 2008 and 3-1 in the Nations League. Notably, Italy has only achieved three consecutive wins against France once in history, from 1928 to 1978.

Italy and France are set to meet in Milan for the fourth time in their history. Their previous encounters include their very first match on May 15, 1910, where the Azzurri triumphed 6-2 under coach Umberto Meazza. The second match, held on January 18, 1920, saw the highest number of goals scored between the two teams, with Italy winning 9-4, coached by Vincenzo Resegotti. The third meeting took place during the EURO 2008 qualifiers on September 8, 2007, ending in a goalless draw with Roberto Donadoni at the helm.

Italy National team Tickets

Italy has only surpassed its goal tally in a single match once, scoring 11 goals against Egypt on June 9, 1928. This is more than the 9-4 victory over France on January 18, 1920. Additionally, Italy has also netted nine goals in matches against the USA in 1948 and Armenia in 2019. Milan stands out as one of the two cities where the Italian national team has celebrated the most victories, totaling 39 wins (with 19 draws and 3 losses) in the Lombard capital. This matches their record in Rome, despite having played four fewer matches in Milan.

After winning 10 of their first 11 encounters with France (with just one loss), the Azzurri have struggled in their last five meetings against Les Bleus, resulting in 2 draws and 3 losses. Notably, Italy has only experienced a winless streak of more than one match at home against a single opponent once, which was a six-match series against Austria from 1912 to 1928 (3 draws and 3 losses).

Italy have won both of their last two games in official competitions (4-1 against Israel and 1-0 against Belgium) and have not won in a row, friendlies excluded, since the series of 10 consecutive victories recorded between November 2020 and July 2021, under the technical guidance of Roberto Mancini.

Player Stats

In this Nations League season, Federico Dimarco has emerged as Italy’s top chance creator, racking up 11 opportunities, while Davide Frattesi comes in second with six. Dimarco has also played a key role in the Azzurri’s offense, being involved in three goals—equal with Mateo Retegui and Frattesi. His tally includes one goal against France on September 6 and two assists.

After netting a goal in the first leg on September 6, Bradley Barcola stands out as the French player with the highest number of total shots taken (11), the most passes into the opponent’s penalty area (36), the greatest number of open play chances created for his teammates (seven), and the top successful dribbles (12) in this Nations League.

🏆👉  Mission accomplished! Italy emerged victorious in the Nations League Group A match against Belgium on Thursday, November 14, 2024, held at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels. Thanks to Sandro Tonali’s goal, Italy has secured their spot in the Quarterfinals. It was a solid performance from Italy, who controlled much of the game and came close to increasing their lead on several occasions. The decisive moment came in the 11th minute of the first half when Tonali simply tapped in a pass from Di Lorenzo right in front of the goal.

Italy showcased their effectiveness, leaving Belgium unable to secure the goals necessary to keep their top two aspirations alive for another matchday. Belgium faced challenges in creating space before the break but improved in the second half.  The top two teams Italy and France pass to the Quarterfinals.

The Italian National team is on a roll, staying undefeated and clinching three consecutive official away victories this season against France, Israel, and Belgium. This marks the first time they’ve achieved this feat since June to November 2019, when they won five matches during the EURO2020 qualifiers.

Here is the situation:

The first two teams will qualify for the quarterfinals. The team that finishes in third place will enter a play-off to avoid being relegated, facing off against one of the second-placed teams from League B, while the fourth-placed team will drop down to League B.

Italy struck first in the 11th minute when Sandro Tonali netted a goal from very close range with a right-footed shot. The Azzurri executed some brilliant play on the right side. Di Lorenzo was located in the box by Frattesi, but De Cuyper failed to make a crucial play. This allowed Di Lorenzo to cross low into the center for Tonali, who had the simple task of tapping it into the open goal.

Stats before the game

Italy has achieved a victory in 64% of their encounters with Belgium, winning 16 out of 25 matches. Among teams they have faced more than 15 times, only Portugal has a higher win rate against them at 67%. The Azzurri have also recorded five draws and suffered four losses against Belgium. Notably, Italy has never drawn in their seven away matches against Belgium, with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses; only against Portugal have they played more away games without a draw, totaling 11. The only time Italy lost in a non-friendly away match to Belgium was during the European Championship qualifiers on May 13, 1972, when they fell 1-2, with Luigi Riva scoring from a penalty.

Italy have conceded in each of their last eight games, after a run of three clean sheets in a row, and for the Azzurri this is their worst run since March-October 2018, while they have not had a worse run since the period between August 1948 and June 1950 (nine in that case).
Italy have won each of their last three UEFA Nations League away games, against Hungary, France and Israel, the same number of victories as in their previous seven away games in the competition (D2 L2).
Belgium have lost four of their last eight games (W2 D2), as many defeats as they suffered in their previous 28 games (W16 D8).
After a 10-game unbeaten run at home (8W, 2D), Belgium lost their most recent home game (1-2 against France) and have not suffered two consecutive defeats at home since November 2013, against Colombia and Japan.

Player Stats

Under Luciano Spalletti, Giovanni Di Lorenzo is the Italy outfield player who has played the most minutes (1215), while Davide Frattesi has scored the most goals (seven goals, three of which in his last four appearances) – overall, the latter has scored eight goals in his first 23 appearances for the national team and since the start of this century, no Italy midfielder has ever reached the nine-goal mark before playing at least 53 games for the national team (Barella did it in the 53rd, De Rossi in the 55th and Pirlo in the 69th).

Silvio Piola and Giuseppe Meazza (both three goals) are the two top scorers for the Azzurri against Belgium; five players follow with two goals, including Nicolò Barella, who could therefore become one of the Italian players with the most goals against his opponents of the day.
