Atalanta won the UEFA Europa League Group Stage game, Matchday 2 on Thursday 5 October 2023 at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal. Atalanta emerged victorious from Lisbon beating Sporting narrowly, with a 1-2 thanks above all to goals from Giorgio Scalvini and Matteo Ruggeri. After a super positive first half, a physiological decline in the Orobic team puts the home team back into the game. However, the penalty scored by Viktor Gyökeres was not enough for the Portuguese and they suffered their first defeat of the group.
In the next round of the Europa League, Atalanta will challenge Sturm Graz, while Sporting Lisbon will instead have to deal with Rakow.
Atalanta are unbeaten in their previous seven matches in the UEFA Europa League group stage between 2017/18 and 2023/24 (5W, 2D), becoming the team to have played the most matches in this stage of the competition without losing a single match.
Atalanta opened the score in the 33rd minute. Giorgio Scalvini defeated Sporting CP goalkeeper from very close range with a right-footed shot to the center. The assist is by Davide Zappacosta.
It is a good first half for Atalanta scoring the second goal in the 43rd minute. Matteo Ruggeri scored from very close range with a left footed shot to the center.
Sporting shortened the distance in the 76th minute. Referee Alejandro Hernandez gave a penalty to Sporting conceded by Giorgio Scalvini following a handball. Viktor Gyökeres defeated Atalanta goalkeeper converting the penalty with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner.

Atalanta are unbeaten in their previous seven matches in the UEFA Europa League group stage between 2017/18 and 2023/24 (5W, 2D), becoming the team to have played the most matches in this stage of the competition without losing a single match. Atalanta finished with a clean sheet on the first day of this UEFA Europa League, but have not kept a clean sheet in two consecutive matches in European competitions since November-December 2019, against Dinamo Zagreb (2-0) and Shakhtar Donetsk ( 3-0) in the Champions League group stage.
