No host nation has ever been eliminated in the quarter-finals at the European Championships; all four previous hosts have progressed to the quarter-final round: England in the penalty shootout against Spain in 1996, the Netherlands beat Yugoslavia 6-1 in 2000, Portugal beat England in the penalty shootout in 2004 and France beat Iceland 5-2 in 2016. This will be Germany’s 19th quarter-final between the World Cup (14) and the European Championship (5), more than any other European national team combining the two tournaments. Additionally, the Germans have advanced past the quarterfinals in 15 of these 18 quarterfinals (83%), including all four European Championships (1996, 2008, 2012, 2016).
