The mission is achieved in grand style. Italy won the UEFA European Qualifiers Group C on Friday 17 November 2023 at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. The Azzurri spread and caught Ukraine in second place, despite a blackout in the central phase of the second half with a brace from Jani Atanasov which momentarily put the Macedonians back in the game. Giacomo Raspadori and Stephan El Shaarawy round off the score after Federico Chiesa’s brace and the goal of Darmian in the first fraction.
The match against Ukraine will be decisive for direct qualification on Monday. A draw will be enough for the qualification.
The match started with a positive flow. Italy opened the score in the 17th minute. Matteo Darmian defeated the North Macedonia goalkeeper from very close range with a headed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Giacomo Raspadori following a corner conceded by Nikola Serafimov.

✅ Stats before the game: After the success in the first of the four matches – 3-2 in Skopje on 9 October 2016 (goal by Belotti and brace by Immobile) – Italy did not win any of the next three matches against North Macedonia: two draws, including the last one (1-1), last September 9th, and a defeat. After picking up seven points (2W, 1D) in his first three games in charge of the Azzurri, Luciano Spalletti lost the most recent match against England (1-3 in London) on 17 October; Italy has not suffered two consecutive defeats since the period between November 2022 and March 2023 (against Austria and England again). Italy lost the last match against England, last October; the Azzurri have not suffered two defeats in a row in the European Championship Qualifying phase since the period between April and November 1983, when the series of consecutive knockouts in this phase was four (Romania, two against Sweden and Czechoslovakia) with Enzo Bearzot on the bench. Italy lost only one of the 35 official matches – excluding friendlies – staged in Rome (24W, 10D): the one by 0-3, on 17 May 1953, in the European International Cup against Hungary, with the Beretta tandem -Meazza on the bench; since then, 30 matches without defeat for the Azzurri.
