Napoli failed the mission and lost the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Second Leg game against Barcelona on Tuesday 12 March 2024 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona, Spain. We started with the 1-1 draw in the first leg, Barcelona took advantage of home advantage and eliminated Napoli from the top European competition. This is a painful defeat because Napoli are living a dark period and now out of the Champions League. Barcelona reach Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, also obtaining their ninth consecutive useful result.
For Napoli, it is the first defeat of the Calzona era after five games unbeaten. With this evening’s elimination, Napoli also loses the opportunity to qualify for the 2025 Club World Cup, in which Juventus will instead participate. Tough!

✅ Stats before the game: Barcelona have remained unbeaten in their last five meetings with Napoli in all competitions, alternating between a draw (three) and a win (two) in this run. In all five previous matches between Barcelona and Napoli in all competitions both teams have always scored at least one goal, in addition to three 1-1 draws, the Blaugrana won the other two matches 4-2 and 3-1. In the knockout phase of the Champions League, on 20 of the 21 occasions in which Barcelona avoided defeat in the first leg played away from home, they qualified for the next round. The only exception was in the 2002/03 edition quarter-finals, drawing 1-1 at Juventus before losing 2-1 at home (in extra time). Napoli have been eliminated on 11 occasions in which they failed to win the first leg at home in the knockout phase of a major European competition. The most recent such elimination was against Barcelona in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League, drawing 1-1 at home before losing 3-1 away. Barcelona have failed to win any of the last four matches played in the knockout phase of the Champions League (2N, 2L), i.e. since the 3-1 success over Napoli in the return match of the round of 16 of the 2019/20 edition. The Blaugrana team has never recorded five games in a row without a win at this stage of the competition.
