Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Inter, 1st position with 38 points and a positive goal difference of +30
Lazio, 10th position with 21 points and a positive goal difference of “0”

Inter remain the sole leader after winning the Serie A Week 16 game against Lazio on Sunday 17 December 2023 at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. This victory is a boost for the morale of the team after the bitterness of the draw against Real Sociedad which cost them first place in the Champions League group and continue their run at the top of the table. Inter moved themselves to +4 above second-placed Juventus.

There he goes… “Inter King Lautaro Martínez” opened the score after defeating Lazio goalkeeper with a left-footed shot to the center. Lautaro is also the top scorer now with 15 goals.

Marcus Thuram slapped the net for the 0-2 with a left-footed shot to the center. The assist is by Nicolò Barella.

✅  Stats before the game: In the last 10 direct matches in Serie A, Lazio and Inter have never repeated the same result twice in a row: in this partial five victories for the Nerazzurri (including the one in the last match played in April), four for the Biancocelesti and a draw. Inter have not won at home to Lazio in Serie A since 29 October 2018 (0-3 with a brace from Icardi and a goal from Brozovic): since then three victories for the Biancocelesti and a draw; Maurizio Sarri, in particular, in addition to having won both previous home games as coach of the Capitoline club against Inter, is unbeaten at home in the top tournament against the Nerazzurri (five wins and two draws). Inter is the team that has won the most matches with a clean sheet in the five major European tournaments in 2023/24 (10, at least two more than any other team); this is only the fourth time that the Nerazzurri have won at least 12 of the first 15 matches of a Serie A championship (after 2006/07, 2017/18 and 2019/20) and it is only the fifth that they have obtained at least 10 clean sheets at this point of the season (after 1971/72, 1972/73, 1988/89 and 2015/16). This is the sixth time that Lazio has collected 21 or fewer points in the first 15 days of a Serie A championship in the three points per win era (the last one dates back to 2015/16): on all the previous five occasions it was not never finished higher than eighth place at the end of the tournament.
Maurizio Sarri and Simone Inzaghi (197 managers in Serie A with Lazio between 2016 and 2021) are two of the five coaches with the highest average points per game in the top division among those who only coached in the three-point era victory and with at least 150 benches in the competition: 1.93 for the current Lazio coach, 1.92 for the Inter coach – only Conte, Allegri and Ancelotti were better than them.

👉 Lineup LAZIO (4-3-3):  Provedel; Lazzari, Casale, Gila, Marusic; Guendouzi, Rovella, Kamada; Felipe Anderson, Immobile, Zaccagni.

👉 Lineup  INTER (3-5-2): Sommer; Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Lautaro Martinez.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
AS Roma, 5th position with 25 points and a positive goal difference of +11
Bologna, 6th position with 25 points and a positive goal difference of +6

Bologna won the Serie A Week 16 game on Sunday 17 December 2023 at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium in Bologna, Italy at 18:00. These two teams are in full swing for Europe. We will only find out which of the Champions League, Europa or Conference League at the end of the championship given that, in addition to the teams of Thiago Motta and Mourinho. For Bologna there is now the Italian Cup match on Wednesday at San Siro against Inter, then another decisive clash for Europe against Atalanta, Saturday 23rd at Dall’Ara. Direct clash also for Roma in the next round with Napoli at the Olimpico.

Thiago Motta therefore beats Mourinho and, as mentioned, rises to fourth place in the table with 28 points, something Bologna has never achieved after 16 matchdays in the era of three points for a win. Roma remain at 25 points, overtaken by Napoli and Fiorentina and at +2 on Atalanta, who play Salernitana tomorrow evening.

Bologna deservedly won the direct clash with Roma and savored the thrill of a solitary fourth place in the standings. After Moro’s goal at the end of the first half, the second half came at the dawn of the second with Kristensen’s own goal. Roma tried to puncture Ravaglia on a couple of occasions but the defensive rejections of the Emilians and the goalkeeper himself, who was monumental on Belotti, extinguished any desire for a Giallorossi comeback. In the final, after an offside by Azmoun who saves Lucumì from a direct red card, the fuel warning light comes on for Mourinho’s men who are no longer able to reopen the match.

Before the match, the Emilians were riding a streak of five consecutive victories within friendly walls, as well as eight consecutive useful results after the defeat suffered against Milan in the second round of the championship. The Romans have not been impeccable so far away from the Olimpico but in the last two they have scored four points.

Bologna took the lead in the 37th minute. Nikola Moro defeated AS Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Dan Ndoye.

Chaos for Roma. What a way to lose points! Bologna extended their lead in the 49th minute thanks to the own goal by Rasmus Kristensen.

Stats before the game:In the last five Serie A matches between Bologna and Roma, just three goals have been scored in total: two 0-0, two victories for the Giallorossi 1-0, one success for the Emilians 1-0. Bologna has not scored against Roma in Serie A for 325 minutes of play (Svanberg’s goal in the 35th minute in the 1-0 at Dall’Ara on 1 December 2021): this is the longest open streak without a goal in terms of minutes against an opponent currently in the top division. In the era of three points for a win, it had never happened that Bologna and Roma both had at least 25 points won after the first 15 rounds of Serie A, while the last time the Emilians were at this point in the tournament on par or better in the Giallorossi’s standings dates back to 2002/03 (Bologna 27 points, Rome 23). Only once, in the era of three points for a win, had Bologna won at least 25 points after the first 15 games of a Serie A tournament: 27 in 2002/03, with Guidolin on the bench. While, again considering the era of three points for a victory (since 1994/95), only in one season was the Emilian team in one of the top five positions in the table at this point of the tournament (fifth place – on a par with Atalanta and Milan – in 2000/01). Bologna have won all of their last four Serie A home games and have not achieved five consecutive home victories in the same top division since the end of the 2018/19 season, when they closed that tournament with seven victories in a row at the Dall’Ara.

👉Lineup BOLOGNA (4-2-3-1): Ravaglia; Posch, Beukema, Calafiori, Kristiansen; Freuler, Moro; Ndoye, Ferguson, Saelemaekers; Zirkzee.

👉 Lineup AS ROMA (3-5-2): Rui Patricio; Mancini, Llorente, Ndicka; Kristensen, Pellegrini, Paredes, Cristante, Spinazzola; El Shaarawy, Belotti.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Udinese, 17th position with 12 points and a negative goal difference of -3
Sassuolo, 15th position with 15 points and a negative goal difference of -6

Udinese failed to win the Serie A Week 16 game after leading 2-0 to end 2-2 on Sunday 17 December 2023 at the Dacia Arena in Udine, Italy. Incredible match at the Dacia Arena. At the start, Udinese doubled their lead with Roberto Pereyra, with the match now seeming to be on the Juventus track. However, the red card for Payero, guilty of having charged Sassuolo, completely mixed up the cards. The Neroverdi began to attack with continuity, hitting two balls, but at the same time winning two penalties: from the spot, in both cases, Domenico Berardi and on both occasions, the result was the same. A brace for the neroverde. Surely, this is a flop for Udinese.

In the next round, Udinese will face Torino, while Sassuolo will have to deal with Genoa.

Udinese took the lead in the 36th minute. Lorenzo Lucca defeated Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli with a headed shot to the center. The assist is by Roberto Pereyra.

Sassuolo conceded another goal in the 55th minute. Roberto Pereyra got his goal with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner.

Sassuolo shortened the distance in the 76th minute. Domenico Berardi defeated Udinese goalkeeper converting a penalty with a left-footed shot to the center. The penalty was conceded by Festy Ebosel.

What a crazy end! Sassuolo equalized in the 88th minute with another penalty converted by Domenico Berardi.

Stats before the game:

👉 Lineup Udinese (3-5-1-1): Silvestri; Kristensen, Pérez, Kabasele; Festy, Lovric, Walace, Payero, Kamara; Pereyra; Lucca.

👉 Lineup Sassuolo (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Toljan, Erlic, Ferrari, Pedersen; Henrique, Boloca; Berardi, Thorstvedt, Laurientè; Pinamonti.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Fiorentina, 7th position with 24 points and a positive goal difference of +6
Hellas Verona, 19th position with 11 points and a negative goal difference of -9

Fiorentina grabbed three valuable points on their quest to climb to the European zone. Fiorentina won the Serie A Week 16 game against Hellas Verona on Sunday 17 December 2023 at the Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence, Italy. Fiorentina reached 27 points while Verona remained in the relegation zone. The good news is that Fiorentina are now in the 6th position sharing those 27 points also with Napoli in the 5th position. Roma went down to the 7th position after losing the game against Bologna.

On the seventeenth matchday, Fiorentina will visit Monza while Verona awaits the salvation match against Cagliari.

The only goal of the match was scored in the 80th minute. Lucas Beltrán defeated Hellas Verona goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipò with a right-footed shot to the top left corner.

✅  Stats before the game: Fiorentina won both matches last season against Verona without conceding a goal (2-0 in Florence, 3-0 away) and have never beaten the Venetians for three games in a row with a clean sheet in their history in Serie A. In general Hellas have not beaten the Tuscan team in the top tournament since 24 November 2019 (1-0 at home with the decisive goal by Di Carmine). Four of the last six matches at the Franchi in Serie A between Fiorentina and Verona have ended with a score of 1-1: a Viola victory in September 2022 and a Venetian success in January 2018 complete this run. In the last seven matchdays Fiorentina have collected just seven points in Serie A (after having collected 17 in the first eight rounds): in this partial only four teams have done worse in the competition, including Verona (last with three points won in this interval). Verona have come from three consecutive draws and have not collected four in a row in the same top championship since April 1989 (five in that case); furthermore, Hellas have not won since August against Roma (13 games in a row), a record streak without success in the competition since the 24 consecutive games recorded between May 2015 and January 2016 under the management of Mandorlini and Delneri. In the era of three points for a win, only once out of eight previous occasions have Verona been relegated to Serie B after having collected more than 10 points in the first 15 days of a Serie A championship: in 2001/02, when they had as many as 22 at this point in the tournament.

👉 Lineup FIORENTINA: Terracciano, Kayode, Martinez Quarta, Ranieri, Biraghi, Ikoné, Lopez, Mandragora, Sottil, Beltran, Nzola

👉 Lineup HELLAS VERONA: Montipò, Tchatchoua, Hien, Magnani, Terracciano, Hongla, Folorunsho, Suslov, Lazovic, Ngonge, Djuric
