Italian Soccer Serie A

👉    Hello, my friends. Here are the 2023-2024 Italian Serie A Week 35 RESULTS / Thirty-fifth Round on Friday 3, Saturday 4, Sunday 5, and Monday 6 May 2024.

Inter won the 2023-2024 Italy’s Champions winning the Scudetto last week after defeating AC Milan in the Milan Derby.   Inter’s 20th Italian league title and earn the Nerazzurri a second star on their shirts.  Inter won the Serie A Week 34 game against Torino thanks to a brace by Hakan Çalhanoglu reaching 89 points.

Sassuolo beats Inter 1-0 and obtained three precious points in the fight for survival.  The decisive goal by Laurienté in the 20th minute. The Nerazzurri have a lot of ball possession but don’t create clear scoring opportunities. Inter’s only defeat in this championship came against Sassuolo (1-2 on 27 September) and today. Sassuolo won both seasonal Serie A matches against Inter for the first time since 2017/18. Sassuolo are still in the relegation zone in the 19th position and this victory is an added boost to continue the battle for salvation.

AC Milan failed their mission to defeat Genoa to claim all 3 points. The game ended with a draw.   This draw is like a victory for Genoa and a flop for AC Milan.  Surely, the ex-Milan player Alberto Gilardino and now Genoa Coach can celebrate this draw. Nevertheless, Milan kept the 2nd position reaching 71 points while Genoa remained in the 12th position with 42 points being -2 points below Monza in the 11th position. One of the match’s highlights happened in the stands and not on the pitch. The Milan fans in the Curva Sud remained silent throughout the match.  It was a sign of protest to show their displeasure with the team. To make matters worse, the fans left with 10 minutes remaining. You bet that the message to the Club is loud and clear to improve the team with better signings.

Torino and Bologna ended with a goalless draw.  This is Torino’s third consecutive 0-0 at home, the ninth of the season. However, Bologna are 5 points away from arithmetically qualifying for the Champions League.   Bologna is also chasing Europe, as they want to crown a memorable season so far with the historic qualification for the Champions League.  The search for the European dream continues for Ivan Juric’s Torino, currently 4 points behind Napoli and Fiorentina. However, the Granata are in a moment of decline having achieved only one victory in the last five championship games.

Juventus and Roma failed to win.  The game ended with a draw helping more Juventus because they move closer to qualifying for the next Champions League. Juventus are maintaining a two-point lead over Bologna and six over Roma. The Giallorossi move to 60 points but with Atalanta, playing tomorrow in Salerno and with two games less, who could catch them.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
AS Roma, 5th position with 59 points and a positive goal difference of +20
Juventus, 3rd position with 65 points and a positive goal difference of +21

Juventus and Roma failed to win the Serie A Week 35 game on Sunday 5 May 2024 at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy.

Roma took the lead with an early goal in the 5th minute. Forward Romelu Lukaku defeated Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny from very close range with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner.

Juventus equalized in the 30th minute. Bremer defeated AS Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar with a headed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Federico Chiesa with a cross following a corner conceded by Angeliño.

✅    Stats before the game:  Juventus have won four of the last six matches against Roma in Serie A (1N, 1L), keeping a clean sheet in half of the matches of this part, including the first leg (1-0, 30 December 2023). Roma won their last home match against Juventus in Serie A (1-0, 5 March 2023) and in the 2000s they only managed to beat the Old Lady twice in a row at the Olimpico in the championship, between 2015 and 2017. Roma have never repeated the same result twice in a row in their last eight Serie A games (W4, D3, L1), after winning five of their first six league games under the guidance of Daniele De Rossi (L1). Juventus are fresh from three consecutive draws in Serie A (vs Torino, Cagliari and Milan) and have not finished four consecutive league games in a draw since the period between February and March 2012, under the guidance of Antonio Conte. Considering only the matches between the top five teams currently in the standings, Roma are the only one of these not to have collected even a point, with seven defeats in as many matches of this kind faced so far in this championship.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Genoa, 12th position with 42 points and a negative goal difference of -2
AC Milan, 2nd position with 70 points and a positive goal difference of +25

AC Milan failed their mission to win the Serie A Week 35 game ended with a draw against Genoa on Sunday 5 May 2024 at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy.

Everything happened in the second half. After a few minutes, Gilardino’s team took the lead again with a precise header from Ekuban. After countless chances, Milan overtook with a crazy one-two: first Gabbia and then Giroud protagonists of the comeback. Genoa seemed to be at the mercy and now doomed, but a carom that leads to Thiaw’s own goal restores parity and allows the two teams to take home a point each.

Previously, AC Milan had won all of their last four matches against Genoa in Serie A and in their history in the competition they have only beaten Grifone multiple times in a row: seven, between 1959 and 1963.

Genoa silenced San Siro in the 5th minute after taking the lead. Mateo Retegui defeated AC Milan goalkeeper Marco Sportiello after converting a penalty with a right-footed shot to the top left corner. The penalty was conceded by Fikayo Tomori after a foul in the penalty area on Alessandro Vogliacco.

AC Milan equalized in the 45th minute before ending the first half. Alessandro Florenzi defeated Genoa goalkeeper Josep Martínez from very close range with a headed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Samuel Chukwueze.

Genoa took back the lead in the 48th minute. Caleb Ekuban scored with a headed shot to the top right corner. The assist is by Alessandro Vogliacco.

Milan equalized again in the 72nd minute. Matteo Gabbia scored with a headed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Alessandro Florenzi with a cross following a corner conceded by Alessandro Vogliacco.

The Rossoneri fans jumping to celebrate the comeback. In the 75th minute, Milan took the lead thanks to the goal by French forward Olivier Giroud with a left-footed shot to the center. The assist is by Christian Pulisic.

What an upset! In the 87th minute, there is an own goal by Malick Thiaw resulting in the equalizer for Genoa.

Stats before the game: Genoa have not found the net in their last three matches against Milan in Serie A and could equal their longest streak without scoring against the Devil in the competition: four games in a row, recorded in both the 1965-1974 and 2011-2013 periods. Considering all competitions, Milan have not won any of their last five matches (D2, L3) and under Stefano Pioli’s management they have only once recorded a longer streak without success: seven official matches between January and February 2023 (D2, L5). Milan have lost their last two home games in all competitions (vs Roma and Inter) and have not achieved three defeats in a row at home in the league and cups since the period between February and March 2014 (vs Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Parma), under the leadership of Clarence Seedorf. Genoa won in the last round of Serie A (3-0 vs Cagliari) and in this championship they have only achieved two successes in a row once (vs Salernitana and Lecce in January); to find two clean sheets in a row in the competition, however, you have to go back to the period between February and March 2022 (series of four).

Hellas Verona, 15th position with 31 points and a negative goal difference of -14

Mission accomlished! Hellas Verona with a sprint race to earn points to avoid falling down in the relegation zone. Verona won the Serie A Week 35 game on Sunday 5 May 2024 at the Marc’Antonio Bentegodi Stadium in Verona, Italy. This is a very prestigious victory with notable specific weight for Veriba. Lazovic opens the ball with a penalty (Christensen’s foul on Noslin) but at the end of the first half the equalizer comes with Castrovilli’s powerful left-footed shot. In the second half, the yellow-blues found the winning goal thanks to Noslin’s missile which struck the Viola goalkeeper after Milenkovic’s short clearance. The final assault by the Italian team was in vain, Verona celebrates at the Bentegodi.

Hellas Verona took the lead in the 13th minute. Darko Lazovic defeated Fiorentina goalkeeper by converting a penalty with a right footed shot to the top left corner. The penalty was conceded by Oliver Christensen after a foul in the penalty area on Tijjani Noslin.

✅  Stats before the game: Hellas Verona have won 14 of the 65 matches against Fiorentina in Serie A (20N, 31L), only against Cagliari (15) have the Venetians achieved more successes in the tournament. Fiorentina have remained unbeaten in their last eight matches against Hellas Verona in Serie A (W4, D4), winning all three of their most recent games without conceding a goal; the Viola have never recorded four clean sheets in a row against the Scaligeri in the tournament. Fiorentina have won seven of their last nine away games against Hellas Verona in Serie A (1N, 1P), after having achieved just one success in as many previous away games against the Venetians in the tournament (3N, 5P). After the 1-0 success against Udinese in the last match at Bentegodi, Hellas Verona could win two home games in a row for the first time in this championship, the last time dating back to April 2023. Fiorentina have won the last two championship matches against Salernitana and Sassuolo, only once in this championship have they achieved three successes in a row: last December (the first of which against the matchday opponents).

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Cagliari, 14th position with 32 points and a negative goal difference of -23
Lecce,  13th position with 36 points and a negative goal difference of -18

Cagliari and Lecce ended the Serie A Week 35 ended with a draw on Sunday 5 May 2024 at the Unipol Domus in Cagliari, Italy. Important points for both teams, with Cagliari moving to +4 from the relegation zone and with Lecce extending to +8. The goals scored by Yerry Mina for Cagliari and the equalizer goal for Lecce by Nikola Krstović.

Cagliari ended the first half ahead, but with one man less. In the 26th minute Gaetano finishes from the edge of the area, with Mina intervening on the trajectory and putting the ball into the net. At the end of the first half Gaetano himself was sent off for a late intervention against Ramadani. In the second half the home team closed in on defense to protect the lead, but in the final Lecce found the equalizer through Krstović: in the 84th minute Almqvist sent a cross towards the far post where the Montenegrin attacker scored with the door unprotected.

Cagliari took the lead in the 26th minute. Yerry Mina defeated Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone with a right-footed shot to the center. The assist is by Gianluca Gaetano following a corner conceded by Remi Oudin.

Lecce equalized in the 83rd minute. Nikola Krstovic defeated Cagliari goalkeeper Andrea Consigli from very close range with a right-footed shot to the top left corner. The assist is by Pontus Almqvist.

Stats before the game: Cagliari remained unbeaten in seven of the last eight matches against Lecce in Serie A (W3, D4), however drawing the most recent three – as many X marks as those recorded in the 16 previous meetings between the two teams in the top flight. The balance sheet is completed by seven victories for the Sardinians and six for the Apulians. Cagliari remained unbeaten in eight of the nine home matches against Lecce in Serie A (5W, 3D): the Salento team’s only away success against the Sardinians in the tournament dates back to 26 February 2012 (2-1 at Sant’Elia). Among the teams involved in the fight for survival in Serie A (between 13th and 19th place currently in the standings – excluding Salernitana, already relegated), Cagliari is the team that has gained the most points in the last 10 matches: 14 (3W , 5N, 2P), immediately behind we find Lecce with 12 (3W, 3N, 4P, equal to Hellas Verona). Since the arrival of Luca Gotti, Lecce has gained 11 points in six championship matches (3W, 2N, 1L), as many as the Salento players had collected in the previous 16 Serie A matches (11 points: 2W, 5N, 9L).  Lecce have won two of their last three away games in the championship (1P), including the last one against Sassuolo; the Apulians could record two successes away from home in a row in Serie A for the first time since February 2023 (against Cremonese and Atalanta in that case).
