Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Cagliari, 16th position with 25 points and a negative goal difference of -16
Monza, 20th position with 15 points and a negative goal difference of -25

Cagliari won the Serie A’s Week 30 on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the Unipol Domus in Cagliari, Italy.  Cagliari secured a crucial 3-0 victory over Monza in their direct matchup, earning three vital points in the battle for survival. Goals were scored by Nicolas Viola, Gianluca Gaetano, and Zito Luvumbo.

With this win, Cagliari now has 29 points, placing them 14th in the standings, and they hold a 6-point cushion above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Monza remains stuck at 15 points, trailing by 10 points from the first team outside the danger zone. The pressure mounts for the Brianza team as the threat of Serie B looms closer.

Cagliari delivered an almost flawless performance, proving to be more threatening than Monza despite not dominating possession. They quickly took the lead in the second half with a header from Viola and then managed the game while seeking additional goals to secure the win. Although they faced some late-game challenges, Davide Nicola can be pleased with the 3-0 result.

On the other hand, Nesta will be less satisfied, as Monza controlled the ball and spent time in the opponent’s half but struggled to create significant scoring chances. Now, only the numbers in the standings are keeping the Brianza team from sinking further.

The good news is for Cagliari. Why? Well, Cagliari has managed only one victory in the league since February, which came during a crucial match against Parma on February 9. Since that win, they have recorded 2 draws and 3 losses, yet they still hold a 3-point cushion above the relegation zone.  Therefore, it’s time to celebrate this victory.

Cagliari will face another crucial match for survival against Empoli on Sunday, April 6, at 15. Monza, meanwhile, will play again on April 5 in a Lombard derby against Como, also at 15.

The game…

Cagliari gained the advantage in the 50th minute when Nicolas Viola scored with a well-placed header into the top left corner. The assist came from Tommaso Augello. Piccoli made a run through the center, passing the ball to Augello, who delivered a cross from the left side. Viola expertly directed his header into the net, securing the goal for the home side.

Monza is in a precarious situation. In the 74th minute, Cagliari added another goal to their tally. Gianluca Gaetano took a right-footed free kick that curled into the bottom left corner. The Sardinians increased their advantage as Gaetano’s shot from the set piece slipped past Turati at the post.

The final whistle has blown, and the game concludes! In the 92nd minute, Zito Luvumbo secured the win with a precise left-footed shot into the bottom right corner, assisted by Gianluca Gaetano. Luvumbo made a perfect run to connect with Gaetano’s pass, delivering an angled shot that left Turati with no chance, effectively sealing the match.

Stats before the game

The Serie A rivalry between Cagliari and Monza is currently tied.  Both teams having one win and one draw from their three matches to date.  Monza has scored in every game.  Cagliari has been strong at home against Monza, remaining unbeaten in their last seven encounters across Serie A and Serie B, with two wins and five draws since 1984.

Recently, Cagliari has struggled offensively, netting only two goals in their last five league matches, averaging 0.4 goals per game, and failing to score in three of those matches—this is the same number of scoreless games they had in their previous nine Serie A outings, where they averaged 1.2 goals per match. Furthermore, Cagliari has lost four of their last seven home Serie A games (with two wins and one draw), matching the total number of defeats they had in their last 15 home matches in the league (four wins and seven draws).

Buy Serie A tickets

In this championship, Monza has accumulated 15 points, a stark contrast to their 42 points after 29 matches in the previous Serie A season. This 27-point gap is the largest difference among teams competing in both this season and the last. In their most recent match, Monza drew 1-1 with Parma. The Brianza team hasn’t managed to go two consecutive games without a loss in Serie A since last November, when they recorded two draws against Torino and Como, both ending in 1-1.

Player Stats

Roberto Piccoli has engaged in 376 duels this Serie A season. Piccoli ranks third among strikers in the top five European leagues, with only Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth (437) and Tim Kleindienst of Borussia Mönchengladbach (405) surpassing him. The Cagliari striker has netted seven goals this season. It’s a new record for a single Serie A campaign. After scoring with his first four attempts in this championship, Dany Mota has gone on to miss his next 23 shots, marking his longest goal drought in Serie A.

✅   What’s happening in Round 29?

I have to say, the competition for the Scudetto is really heating up!

It’s hard to believe that Napoli missed out on winning the match against Venezia ending with a draw. Napoli is now tied with Inter at 61 points. The good news is for Inter because they secured a victory tonight against Atalanta.  Inter reached 64 points having the lead with a 3-point advantage over Napoli with 61.  Inter has a 6-point lead over Atalanta with 58 points.

Venezia 0-0 Napoli. Meanwhile, Venezia has reached 20 points but is still 5 points away from safety.   This marks Napoli’s fifth draw in their last seven matches, placing them alongside Inter at the top of the standings, albeit with one extra game played. On the other hand, Di Francesco’s Venezia achieved their fourth consecutive positive result, having also had several chances throughout the game. For Venezia, this draw feels more like a triumph as they managed to hold off a formidable opponent.

AC Milan staged an impressive comeback to secure a victory beating Como in San Siro.  They turned the game around from a 0-1 deficit to win 2-1.  It is a significant victory to boost the morale for the team, which has been facing a challenging season. However, with 47 points, Milan is still outside the European qualification spots.  This marks Milan’s second consecutive win, as they continue to rally back and have now climbed to seventh place in the standings, temporarily surpassing Roma and Fiorentina, who are set to play against Cagliari and Juventus, respectively. On the other hand, Como is struggling, having gone three matches without a win and sitting at 29 points, just seven points clear of the relegation zone as they await Empoli’s match against Torino. The decisive goal was netted by Tijjani Reijnders.

What a fantastic win for Fiorentina, giving their spirits a significant lift! It was yet another enchanting evening for the Viola as they triumphed over Juventus with a score of 3-0. The race for the Champions League is heating up, bringing several teams back into contention. Fiorentina now sits at 48 points, just 5 points behind Bologna, who is currently in fourth place. Juventus remains stagnant at 48 points.  The match featured two goals in the first half from Robin Gosens and Rolando Mandragora, followed by a third from Gudmundsson in the second half.

Genoa secured a victory against Lecce, making significant progress towards safety. The match concluded with a score of 2-1 in favor of the home team, thanks to two goals from Miretti and a penalty kick converted by Krstovic. With this win, Genoa climbs to 35 points, sitting in 12th place, and Vieira’s squad heads into the break with a comfortable 13-point cushion above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Lecce stays in 16th place, only two points clear of third-from-bottom Empoli.

Hellas Verona win the Derby del Triveneto.  Udinese remains steady at 40 points in the league standings, comfortably positioned in the safe zone. Hellas Verona made significant progress, now sitting at 29 points, which gives them a seven-point cushion over third-from-bottom Empoli.  Verona secured a crucial win in Udine, thanks to a stunning free kick from Duda that clinched the match, which had been closely contested until that moment. Earlier, Udinese posed threats with players like Ehizibue, Atta, and Lovric, while Kastanos nearly extended the visitors’ lead just before halftime.

Torino claims three points after a difficult encounter. Empoli begins the match with more flair, outshining the home team in the first half. As the second half unfolds, Vanoli’s team becomes more cohesive and determined, scoring the decisive goal through Nikola Vlasic’s right-footed shot from the edge of the box with just twenty minutes remaining. Despite their final push, the Tuscans fail to score and find themselves third from the bottom in the standings.  Torino 1 – 0 Empoli.

Monza and Parma ended with a 1-1 at the U-Power Stadium.  The draw benefits Parma more than Monza, as both teams earn an additional point in the standings.   Currently, Monza sitting at the bottom of the table with just 15 points.  Meanwhile, Parma reached 25 points.   Monza kicked off strongly, breaking the deadlock in the 60th minute with a corner kick that Izzo converted with a precise tap-in following a setup from D’Ambrosio.  For about twenty minutes, the pace was relentless, but then Parma shifted gears. With fresh players on the field, they found the equalizer; Bonny scored in the 84th minute with a brilliant double dribble followed by a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Cagliari, 16th position with 25 points and a negative goal difference of -15
AS Roma, 8th position with 46 points and a positive goal difference of +13

On Sunday, March 16, 2025, Roma defeated Cagliari in Serie A Week 29 at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. With 49 points, Roma climbed to the 7th place and is racing to break into the top six. Cagliari, on the other hand, is in 16th place with 25 points risking to fall into the relegation zone.

In the history of Serie A, only Luciano Spalletti (59.2%) has a better win rate as Roma’s coach than Claudio Ranieri (57.3%), who has achieved 51 wins in 89 matches. Ranieri had two separate stints with Cagliari: first from 1988/89 to 1990/91, where he led the team to consecutive promotions from Serie C1 to Serie B and then from Serie B to Serie A (marking his debut season in the top division), and again from January 2023 to May 2024, during which he helped the club achieve promotion to Serie A in the 2022/23 season.

Roma gained the advantage in the 62nd minute when Artem Dovbyk found the net with a left-footed shot from close range, capitalizing on a corner given away by Matteo Prati. The score is now 1-0.

Stats before the game:
