Hello my friends.  Here is the Serie A ROUNDUP for
the
Serie A Week 37, 2013 – 2014 Season on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May
2014, matchday 37.   Countdown my friends! 1 more games after this
Round and the 2013 – 2014 Serie A will end on Sunday May 18!   Juventus winning
the 2013-2014 last week!

AS Roma – 0 – 1 Juventus.   The 2013-2014 Scudetto Champions Juventus reaffirming their dominion in Serie A by defeating AS Roma their main rival at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium.  Making it a painful defeat for the Roman gladiators is that the only goal was scored by the ex forward Pablo Osvaldo in the 94th minute!   Juventus reaching 99 points and will look to celebrate the “100” mark next week in their home stadium.

Highlights for games on Saturday.   Inter 4 – 1 Lazio.  It was the last game, the goodbye from Inter Captain Javier Zanetti at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium on Saturday 18 May 2014.  Zanetti retiring from active football professional as a player to become a Club director with Inter.  It was en emotional game as Zanetti started as a substitute in the 52nd minute embraced by a standing ovation, even, a fan invading the pitch to salute Zanetti. Inter defeated Lazio and securing their spot in the Europa League next season reaching 60 points.

Hellas Verona 2 – 2 Udinese.  A draw with a failure sense for Hellas Verona failing to win this home game at the Friuli Stadium.  Verona were in the lead and ready to battle for the Europa League, yet, a cold shower in the 91st minute.  Udinese equalizing the game to crash Verona hope….

Sad news for 3 teams, mathematically speaking, Bologna, Catania, and Livorno are relegated to Serie B.  A sweet and sour victory for Catania defeating Bologna at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium, but not enough to save themselves.  Bologna 1 – 2 Catania.

Video, Javier Zanetti Final Speech on Saturday 10 May 2014 at the Meazza Stadium

What a moment!  I must give my respect to such a symbolic and legendary footballer “Inter Captain Javier Zanetti.”  It was Zanetti’s last game as an Inter player at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium on Saturday 10 May 2014 ending with a victory qualifying to the Europa League for next year:   Inter 4 – 1 Lazio valid for the Serie A Week 37.  Zanetti will continue his love story with Inter now as a club director.

Memory lane… Javier Zanetti was born on August 10, 1973 in Buenos Aires Argentina.  Zanetti is retiring from active football at 40 years old!  Zanetti became the first purchase by former Inter president Massimo Moratti in 1995 transferring from Argentinian team Banfield.  Zanetti made his debut with Inter in the game against Vincenza.

Here are the declarations from Zanetti, “”I really struggled to hold back the tears, I’m crying on the inside. It’s an amazing, unforgettable evening,” Javier Zanetti explained to journalists after Inter v Lazio.

“Lots and lots of images passed through my mind tonight. I thank the fans and the Moratti family for the career I’ve been able to have and all the love they’ve given me. I could see what sort of atmosphere there was even before the game – incredible. I’ve always been proud to defend these colours.

“I called Esteban [Cambiasso] over because it was right to salute someone like him who has given so much for this shirt, like all the others.

“It wasn’t easy to take this decision. I’ve given everything I had. I’m glad to be able to quit when I’m physically and mentally fit.

“How did it go? Great, I couldn’t have imagined it any better. It’s been a fantastic evening. My team-mates gave me this brilliant win which means we’re where we wanted to be, in the Europa League. We all cried. I cried on the outside, on the inside, quite honestly I couldn’t keep it in anymore. It’s a never-ending day, one that will never finish.

“I’ll tell the lads who pull on the Inter jersey in future that they have to honour it and defend it as I’ve had the privilege of doing. It’s important to have that sense of belonging and understand what it means to play for Inter and defend these colours across the world. That’s what they need to understand.

“I’ll miss lots of things: the dressing room, drinking mate with Samuel and Milito, the training camps. I’ll carry it all with me for the rest of my life.”

Javier Zanetti becoming a record-man:

– The player with the most appearances for Inter (856);
– The most decorated player in Inter history (16 trophies);
– The player with the most caps for the Argentine national team (145);
– The foreign player with most Serie A appearances (613);
– The Inter player with the most appearances in the Serie A, Italian Super Cup and UEFA competitions;
– The Inter player with most appearances in the UEFA Champions League (105);
– The player with most consecutive appearances for Inter in the Serie A (137);
– The oldest player to score in the Club World Cup (37 years and 127 days old);
– The Inter player with the most appearances in the Milan derby (47);
– The player with the most Champions League appearances as a captain (82);
– The oldest foreign player to have played a Serie A match (Inter v Napoli on 26 April 2014, when he took to the pitch at 40 years and 259 days old).

Here is the video from Zanetti saluting the fans at the Meazza.  Inter players were overwhelmed just watching their iconic captain waving his final goodbye as a player.

Here is the video when Javier Zanetti replaced midfielder Jonathan in the 52nd minute to play his last game at the Meazza as an Inter player.

Moratti: “A sentimental evening”

MILAN – "It will be a sentimental evening. This is a story that goes a long way back, one we’ve shared together since June 1995. Zanetti has the same memories and feelings as I do. It’s a very unusual day for me." That’s what FC Internazionale honorary president Massimo Moratti said before Inter v Lazio.

He added: "I hope Zanetti can give the best of himself tonight. Today is all about him. I think this is what football’s about: it’s about emotions and you can’t fight them. Would I like to see him start the game? Yes, I would but I don’t know if he will."

Ausilio: “Zanetti will be a valuable resource”

MILAN – Piero Ausilio spoke to Sky Italia before kick-off. "What role do I see Zanetti in? That’s not for to me to say but I’m sure the president will have thought about how best to fit him in. They’ll sit down together and work out the best solution. We know we’ll have another valuable resource available to us."

Asked whether the Nerazzurri fans can dream of a signing like Dzeko, Inter’s sporting director went on: "As things stand realistically that’s out of the question. I believe football needs a sense of realism and we’ll try to do the best we can while bearing in mind our financial strategies

"Hernanes? We always expect more from every player because you must never rest on your laurels. We knew that bringing a player in during the January window was forcing things a bit, not only financially but also on the playing side because the team had been working together for a while. As soon as he came into the side we started winning, then he had some injury problems but he’s a top player and I’m sure he’ll be even more important for us next season."
