Brazil and Costa Rica made their debut with a goalless draw in the Copa America 2024 Group Stage Group D Matchday 1 on Monday 24 June 2024 at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA.   This is a disappointment for Brazil who were favorites to win the game and failed to even score a goal. A draw for Costa Rica might be considered a positive result.  Group D sees Colombia leading with 3 points after defeating Paraguay 2-1.

Incredible so, Brazil had more than 75% possession in the first half and had a goal disallowed for offside.  Costa Rica proved to be a solid wall not allowing Brazil’s attack.

In the second half, in the 63rd minute, Lucas Paqueta hit the woodwork with a long-range effort just a minute before a venomous Guilherme Arana strike was kept out by  save from Costa Rica goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira.

In the final 10 minutes before ending the game, Paqueta twice shot wide

Previously, Brazil has historically dominated meetings against Costa Rica.  Stats showing Brazil winning 10 out of 11 matches, including a 2-0 victory in the 2018 World Cup group stage.

In preparation for the big show, Brazil got a 1-0 win over England at Wembley and fought back to draw 3-3 with Spain at the Bernabeu Stadium earlier this year. The Copa America is the first time Dorival has had time to work with his players, who face Costa Rica following a three-week training camp in Florida before taking on Paraguay and Colombia in Group D.

✅    Colombia made their debut with a victory in the Copa America 2024 Group Stage Group D Matchday 1 on Monday 24 June 2024 at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, USA. Colombia Captain James Rodriguez created both goals assists in Colombia’s 2-1 win over Paraguay. Rodriguez grabbed a second assist 10 minutes later when he whipped in a dangerous free-kick, with Jefferson Lerma’s glancing header evading Paraguay goalkeeper Rodrigo Morinigo.

Paraguay got a goal back after the break through Brighton & Hove Albion forward Julio Enciso, but were unable to find an equalizer as Colombia defended well to secure the victory and extend their unbeaten run to 24 matches.

Prior the game, motivation was high for both teams. Paraguay has won the Copa America twice (1953, 1979) while Colombia has won it once (2001).

✅    Uruguay made their debut in the Copa America 2024 with a victory against Panama on Sunday 23 June at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, USA. Uruguay scored 3 goals to claim all 3 points and lead the group.  Panama sees the game as a tough test to pass to dream with the qualification to the Round of 16. We might argue that it wasn’t that a bad result for Panama scoring an honor goal to give them the added boost to the morale for the next game.  Panama with a bad news because captain Anibal Godoy will be a big miss as he is out with injury.

  • Defender Mathias Olivera (Napoli) played until the 60th minute and was replaced by Sebastián Cáceres.

✅    United States won the Copa America Group Stage Group C Matchday 1 defeating Bolivia on Sunday 23 June 2024 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. We have several Serie A players in the USA team.   Surely, this is a great victory with a Serie A touch.  AC Milan forward and Captain of the USA scored a goal and provided an assistance.  Juventus forward Tim Weah gave the assistance to Pulisic’s goal.  Well done, ragazzi!  The USA comes after a pair of friendlies in which the team were winless against Colombia and Brazil. Bolivia have won just twice since the start of 2023.
