Cutrone: "I said yes to Fiorentina straight away"

Patrick Cutrone revealed he didn’t think twice about accepting a move to Fiorentina as he appeared at his official unveiling on Thursday afternoon – hours after scoring his first Viola goal in the 2-1 cup win over Atalanta.

“I wanted a new challenge and the opportunity to show that I can do well,” said Cutrone. “As soon I heard talk of Fiorentina I said yes straight away. I’m delighted with my decision. There’s a great team here and this is a big club – I want to do well here.”

It took Cutrone just 13 minutes to score his maiden Fiorentina goal on his first start for the club – but the striker insisted his only secret is hard work and focus.
“Nothing is easy in football or in life,” he said. “I’ve always focused on training at 100% and making sure I’m ready. It was a wonderful feeling to score on my first start and I hope to produce more of the same.”
Cutrone also reflected on his time in the Premier League with Wolves this season.
“It was a fantastic experience and I matured a lot as a player and as a person,” he said. “Despite the fact that I didn’t play much, I learned a lot – in training too. Many people don’t realise this but you can learn a great deal through training in terms of your instincts. I got to know the language and a new culture – it was a good experience.
“I want to improve across the board – in the areas where I’m stronger and in those where I’m weaker. I know I can get better in many areas, so I’ll give everything I have to progress.”
The new Viola No.63 – the shirt number chosen as a nod to the year of his father’s birth – went on to look ahead to Saturday’s visit to Napoli, where he will cross paths with former coach Gennaro Gattuso.
“Like in every game, we need to give 100% and try to get the three points,” said Cutrone. “We know it’s going to be a tough game at a difficult stadium, but I think we have a good side and if we play as a team we can do it. As I’ve said many times, I’m thankful to Gattuso for the faith he showed in me at AC Milan. He made his decisions and I have to respect them. I thank him – as I do all the coaches I’ve had – because I developed as a player and a person.”

Catalina Perez Jaramillo joins Fiorentina Women

Fiorentina Women’s FC have completed the signing of Colombia international goalkeeper Catalina Perez Jaramillo for the rest of the 2019/20 season.

Born in Bogota in 1994, Jaramillo joins the Viola from United Women’s Soccer League side New England Mutiny. She has already completed a medical and is now available to the Viola coaching staff.

Jaramillo represented Colombia at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup at the age of just 15 in 2008 and made her senior debut against USA in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2015.

Commisso statement

Before returning to the USA, president Rocco Commisso made the following comments regarding criticism of the Fiorentina fans.

“I’ve read and heard some very harsh and offensive things about the Fiorentina fans from both [Gian Piero] Gasperini and president [Antonio] Percassi,” he said. “I’ve been told that after Gasperini’s comments about [Federico] Chiesa last year, Chiesa was insulted all game long in Bergamo. My son and Joe Barone were insulted and even threatened in the stands when we played Atalanta in Parma in the league this year, but nobody said or did anything, except pass the blame onto the stewards. I showed Percassi’s son the utmost hospitality and spent a good while speaking to him. Before talking about the fans of other teams, particularly Fiorentina, I think you should look at what’s happening at your own stadium. After the sad episode with the racist chants against Dalbert, Atalanta didn’t come out straight away and strongly condemn them. The Fiorentina fans deserve respect.”

Iachini looks ahead to Atalanta cup clash

Giuseppe Iachini has called for his Fiorentina side to build on their win over SPAL on Sunday as they welcome Atalanta to the Stadio Artemio Franchi in the Round of 16 of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday.

“It was certainly good to get three points after such a long time,” said Iachini, speaking in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday. “It gives us a bit of respite in terms of our league position and gives us the opportunity to work on our weaknesses and build on the positives we’ve seen: compactness, heart, spirit…”

Iachini acknowledged that Fiorentina are in for a tough test against Atalanta, who are enjoying another impressive season under Gian Piero Gasperini.
“Atalanta’s record speaks for itself,” he said. “They’ve been working together for three or four years – that counts for something. We’ve been training together for two weeks. We can use Atalanta as an example of how to reduce the gap between the top sides and the sides just below them in the modern game – through football with a lot of intensity, pace, running and physicality, combined with the necessary organisation and mentality.”
The Viola boss was also asked whether Patrick Cutrone will be fit enough for his first Fiorentina start.
“I’ll get a clearer idea of that today,” said Iachini. “This will be his third training session with us. If we see what we need to see, he could start the game. Let’s see how he gets on today.”
Iachini also had a message for the fans, who were in good voice during Sunday’s win over SPAL.
“I want to thank the fans because they stuck behind the team when things got tough on Sunday,” he said. “I’m sure that they’ll continue to do that, as they’ve always done. It will take a bit of a patience while the team works on coming out of the situation they’ve found themselves in.”
