✅  Stats before the game:

Roma triumphed in their latest Coppa Italia match against Milan on January 31, 2007, breaking the Rossoneri’s unbeaten streak of six games (with four wins and two draws) against them. After facing two consecutive defeats to Roma in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals in 1980 and 1984, Milan successfully progressed in their most recent encounter at this stage during the 2003/04 season, winning both legs 2-1. Under Stefano Pioli’s management, Milan has had a mixed record in their last four Coppa Italia quarter-final appearances, alternating between advancing and being eliminated, following three semi-final runs in the previous four seasons with coaches Gattuso, Montella, and Mihajlovic. Meanwhile, Roma has struggled in their last five quarter-final matches in the Coppa Italia, with only one team, Roma themselves, having a longer losing streak at this stage between 1998 and 2002 (six losses), while Empoli and Padova each have five.

Milan have lost three of their last five Coppa Italia matches (W2), as many defeats as in their previous 18 matches in the competition (W8 D7).

After Juventus (36) and Inter (29), Milan (24) and Roma (22) are the two teams to have reached the Coppa Italia semi-finals the most times in the competition’s history – however, the Giallorossi have not progressed past the quarter-finals since the 2016/17 season (2-1 against Cesena).

What an exhilarating derby between Milan and Inter ending the Serie A Week 23 with a draw on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. Reijnders kicked things off with a goal just before halftime, but De Vrij equalized in the 93rd minute after the Nerazzurri struck the posts three times in the second half. It was a thrilling match packed with surprises, ultimately finishing in a 1-1 draw that brings joy to Napoli.

Inter is in 2nd place with 51 points, while AC Milan, currently in 8th with 35 points, is under pressure to improve their standing and re-enter the European competition.

Nicola Zalewski made a memorable debut with Inter, providing the assist for De Vrij’s equalizing goal. Also, English footballer Kyle Walker making his debut with AC Milan since the starting lineup.

Sérgio Conceição, who played 41 matches in Serie A for Inter from 2001 to 2003, has the chance to be the second AC Milan coach in 35 years to win his first two Milan derbies against the Nerazzurri across all competitions. The only other coach to achieve this feat was Massimiliano Allegri, who did so between 2010 and 2011.

The beginning of the match

AC Milan gained the upper hand in the 45th minute, right before halftime. Tijjani Reijnders found the back of the net with a right-footed shot aimed at the top right corner. It was a fantastic pass from Theo to Leao, who then delivered a cross into the box. Inter’s goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, misjudged the situation, allowing Reijnders to pounce on the rebound and score.

Inter managed to equalize in the 93rd minute when Stefan de Vrij found the back of the net with a close-range left-footed shot aimed at the bottom left corner. The assist came from Nicola Zalewski, whose cross set up De Vrij perfectly for the open goal, leaving Maignan with no chance.
