The Coppa Italia Semifinal First Leg showcased the Milan Derby.  AC Milan and Inter ended with a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at the iconic San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. Tammy Abraham opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Hakan Çalhanoglu equalized in the 67th minute with a long-range shot. Maignan made crucial saves against Zalewski and Mkhitaryan, while Leao posed a threat for the Rossoneri.

The return match of the Coppa Italia semi-final featuring Inter and Milan is scheduled for April 23.

To give you some background, Milan and Inter have clashed in eight previous knockout rounds of the Coppa Italia before reaching the final, with both teams advancing four times. The last time they met in this context, the Nerazzurri emerged victorious in the 2021/22 semi-finals.

AC Milan gained the upper hand in the 47th minute when forward Tammy Abraham found the net with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. Youssouf Fofana provided the assist after a collision with Frattesi, allowing Abraham to outmaneuver Martinez in the box with a precise angled shot.
AC Milan 1 – 0 Inter

Inter leveled the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute when Hakan Çalhanoglu found the net with a powerful right-footed shot aimed at the bottom left corner. Joaquín Correa provided the assist, setting up Çalhanoglu from outside the box, where he struck a fierce shot that beat goalkeeper Mike Maigna

 Stats before the game

AC Milan has not lost to Inter in their last three encounters across all competitions, achieving two wins and one draw, following a streak of six straight losses. The last occasion AC Milan secured three victories over Inter in a single season was back in 2004/05, with one win in the league and two in the UEFA Champions League.

Inter has scored in every one of their last 11 encounters with Milan, marking a notable trend in the history of the Milan derby. Only twice has a team managed to score in 12 consecutive matches, with Inter achieving this feat on both occasions, first from 1954 to 1959 and again from 1993 to 1997.

Milan (25) and Inter (30) are among the top three teams with the most appearances in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, alongside Juventus (36). The Rossoneri have faced elimination in their last three attempts at this stage, while the Nerazzurri have advanced in their last two appearances after being knocked out in the previous four.

Coppa Italia

Inter has secured victories in their last two Coppa Italia matches without allowing any goals (2-0 against Udinese and Lazio). The last time they achieved a longer streak of consecutive wins without conceding in this competition was in 2010, when they recorded three 1-0 victories in a row during the semi-finals and final under José Mourinho.

Milan has both scored and conceded in their last four Coppa Italia matches, netting a total of 14 goals during this stretch—one more than they managed in their previous ten games combined.

Player Stats

Tijjani Reijnders has contributed to two goals in the three matches against Inter this season (with an assist in the first leg and a goal in the return). The Dutch midfielder has scored nine goals at home in the 2024/25 season, and the last Milan midfielder to hit double digits in home goals in a single season was Kaká in 2008/09 (10).

Lautaro Martínez has netted nine goals against Milan across all competitions, with only Giuseppe Meazza (12) and Stefano Nyers (11) having a better record against the Rossoneri in Inter’s history. Additionally, he has scored eight goals in the Coppa Italia, a record that no Nerazzurri player has surpassed in the last 20 seasons, matching Julio Cruz’s tally.

AC Milan’s coach, Sergio Conceição, conducted his pre-match press conference in anticipation of the first leg of the Coppa Italia Semifinal. This two-legged matchup, which carries significant importance, will see them go up against Inter at San Siro on Wednesday. Here are his statements.

DERBY IN THE CUP
“The derby is always an important game for everyone given the context, but it’s a different time and a few of the players will be different. Inter are always a strong side, but we want to start the game strongly to reach our aim, which is winning.”

COPPA ITALIA AS A ROUTE TO EUROPE
“We need to focus on the game and nothing else. It’s true that it is the shortest route, but we still have a few games in the league that we need to play and win.”

RAFA LEÃO
“The group is doing well, and they are all available. We still have a session tomorrow; today, the starters from Napoli did their own session. It’s up to me to choose; we have a strong starting 11, and I’m happy that the subs are coming on and making an impact. You can’t play with 26 starters. I’ve known Rafa for years, I watched him play as a youngster, and he needs to keep developing. In terms of talent, he’s one of the best players in the world; he needs to find consistency in front of goal.”

SANTI GIMENEZ AND JOÃO FÉLIX
“It’s normal to need time to adapt when you come it Italy. It’s not an easy league. In fact, it’s one of the best, with great coaches and players. We need to keep Santi calm with the trust that we give him. The same goes for João.”

ANOTHER TROPHY
“I’d be delighted to win another trophy, but first, we need to win the semis and then the final. I don’t like to predict the future, but I do like to take it day by day in order to improve the team on a professional and personal level.”

TACTICAL BALANCE
“I like my team to play short, but it’s hard without the right coordination. When we don’t act as a unit, it gets harder, and we get more vulnerable.”

CUP COACH
“Coaches either win or they don’t win. Cups have a different weight, Serie A or the Champions League are different, but there are no league coaches and cup coaches.”
