🇮🇹  AC Milan and Torino ended the Serie A Week 1 with a draw on Saturday 17 August 2024 at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy.  In an exciting match, Milan managed to come back and secure a 2-2 draw against Torino. The game was packed with thrilling moments. The first goal came in the 30th minute when Thiaw accidentally scored an own goal after Bellanova hit the post. Second, Torino’s Duván Zapata then made it 2-0 in the 68th minute.  In addition, Milan’s Álvaro Morata pulled one back in the 89th minute, and in a nail-biting finish, Okafor scored the equalizer in the 95th minute.

AC Milan and Torino met for the first time on the opening day of Serie A. This marks the first occasion since the 2011/12 season that AC Milan has drawn on matchday one, having previously ended in a 2-2 draw against Lazio at home on September 9, 2011.

New signing Álvaro Morata found the net for AC Milan, scoring his first Serie A goal in 824 days.  Having said that, Morata’s last goal being for Juventus against Lazio on May 16, 2022. The Spanish striker has netted three league goals against Torino, with only Bologna being a tougher opponent for him, as he has four goals against them in the Italian top flight.

Noah Okafor has made a notable impact in Serie A, scoring seven goals, six of which came off the bench.  All in all, the Swiss forward has contributed to two goals in his last three matches (one goal and one assist), matching his total from the previous seven games.

As for statistics, AC Milan has maintained an impressive unbeaten streak of 29 home games against Torino in Serie A (20 wins, 9 losses).  In any case, that is their longest unbeaten run is against Hellas Verona (32 matches), and they previously went 29 games without a home defeat against Lazio from February 1991 to April 2019.

In the upcoming Serie A Week 2, AC Milan is set to face Parma in an away match. Meanwhile, Torino will host Atalanta in their home game.

Torino took the advantage in the 31st minute, leaving AC Milan in a difficult situation thanks to an own goal by Malick Thiaw.  In any case, the goal was upheld following a VAR assessment.

What a surprise for the Rossoneri! Torino netted two goals in the 68th minute. Duván Zapata, the Colombian forward, found the net with a close-range header right in the middle of the goal, courtesy of Valentino Lazaro’s assist. Milan is now behind by 2 goals.

In the 88th minute, Álvaro Morata kicked off his AC Milan career in style by scoring a goal! He unleashed a right-footed shot from the center of the box that found its way to the bottom right corner, assisted beautifully by Tijjani Reijnders.

Milan narrowly escaped defeat! In the 95th minute, Noah Okafor scored the equalizer for AC Milan with a well-placed right-footed shot into the upper center of the goal.  The assistance is by Yunus Musah. The Rossoneri can breathe a little easier now!

Preview and Stats before the game

In their latest Serie A encounter, Torino triumphed over Milan with a score of 3-1 on May 18. Remarkably, in the last 38 years, the Granata have only pulled off two consecutive wins against AC Milan in the top league.  The first one during the period from April to September 2019.  In Serie A, Milan has not lost to Torino in their last 28 home matches.  All in all, the statistics highlight 20 victories and 8 draws during this impressive streak.

The last time Torino triumphed away against the Rossoneri in Serie A was on March 24, 1985.  Torino clinched a 1-0 win thanks to Walter Schachner’s goal, with Luigi Radice at the helm. On the other hand, Milan has been quite successful, winning their last four opening matches in Serie A. Their longest winning streak in the first round of the championship spanned from 1987 to 1996 with 10 victories. Moreover, after a 0-0 stalemate with Cagliari last season, Torino has a chance to draw on the opening day of Serie A for two consecutive years, a feat not accomplished since the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons.

This will be the third time Torino and Milan meet on the first day of the championship in Serie A, with each team having one win at home: Torino won 2-1 on September 17, 1939, and Milan triumphed 3-2 on August 21, 2016. Milan wrapped up last season with only one win in their final nine matches across all competitions (D4 L4), that victory being a 5-1 win against Cagliari on May 11, after a streak of seven consecutive wins. Paulo Fonseca will make history as the first Portuguese coach for Milan in Serie A. Under Fonseca, Lille recorded the cleanest sheets in Ligue 1 for the 2023/24 season (22) and was the second-highest scoring team with 86 goals, just behind PSG’s 124.

Alvaro Morato vs Duván Zapata

Álvaro Morata has turned things around, scoring five goals in his last seven games in the Big-5 European leagues after a slow start where he didn’t find the net in his first seven.  Morata has scored 21 goals in 48 matches with Atlético Madrid in 2023/24. Duván Zapata has also made a significant impact against Milan, having scored six goals in Serie A. Since he first found the net against the Rossoneri in the 2015/16 season, only Ciro Immobile has scored more against them, with seven goals. In total, Zapata has contributed to nine goals against Milan, including three assists, which is just behind Paulo Dybala’s tally of ten.
