Hello my friends. Here are the results of the Serie A Week 31 – Thirty-first Round on Saturday 2, Sunday 3, and Monday 4 April 2016

It’s a brilliant round for Juventus increasing their lead after defeating Empoli with a 1-0.   Juventus reaching 73 points and a positive goal difference of +40.   Juventus having a +6 points advantage over Napoli in the second position with 67 points and a positive goal difference of +36.    Napoli wasted precious points after losing the away game against Udinese at the Friuli Stadium.   Udinese defeating Napoli with a 3-1.

A thriller round also for the result of the Derby della Capitale.  Yep, Roma defeating Lazio at the Olimpico Stadium with a humiliating score. Lazio 1 – 4 AS Roma.    The defeat a total disaster for Lazio and their fans protesting.   Bottom line, the defeat resulted in the sacking of Lazio coach Stefano Pioli replaced by Lazio Youth coach Simone Inzaghi.

Napoli with 67 points risking to lose the 2nd position if continuing losing.    Roma following closely with 63 points being only -4 points below Napoli.

The top scorer up to Round 31: Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain with 30 goals

It’s a sad day for Italian football.  On behalf of Italian Soccer Serie A blog hosted by Anna Italia we are sending our deepest condolences to Cesare Maldini family and fans for the death of Cesare dying at age 84 on Sunday 3 April 2016 in Milan, Italy.   In his honor, there was a minute of silence held before every Serie A game in Italy and AC Milan players wearing black armbands in their game against Atalanta at the Atleti Azzurri D’Italia Stadium.

Cesare Maldini, an icon of AC Milan, born in Trieste 5 February 1932 and dying in Milan on Sunday 3 April 2016.   Maldini played as a defender for AC Milan gaining also the admiration of other Clubs for his commanding elegance, leadership, and respectful person.  It was a joy for Cesare to see also his son Paulo Maldini becoming an AC Milan icon in the defense and serving as Captain too.   Now, Cesare Maldini will continue as his grandson Christian and Daniel (Paolo’s sons) is playing for AC Milan Youth program.

Cesare Maldini won with AC Milan:

  • 4 Serie A league titles “Scudetto”
  • 1 European Cup.  Precisely, nine years after joining AC Milan became the first Italian ever to hold  the famous European Cup trophy when he captained AC Milan to a 2-1 win over Benfica.
  • Cesare Maldini played for Triestina 1952-1954 making 32 appearances, 1954-1966 for AC Milan making 347 appearances and scoring 3 goals, and 1966-1967 for Torino making 33 appearances.

In the International level, Cesare Maldini played for the Italian National football team.

  • Maldini earning 14 caps and participating in the 1962 World Cup.
  • Maldini also served as coach of the Italian Under-21 side, winning the European Under-21 Championship with a record three consecutive times.

FAREWELL TO A CLUB LEGEND, Cesare Maldini

AC Milan pays tribute to Cesare Maldini.

MILAN – A man who was destined for immense achievements at Milan: in just his first season at the club, Cesare Maldini won the Scudetto, with his debut coming in September 1954, in a Milan team boasting the likes of Buffon and Zagatti, Liedholm, Nordahl and Schiaffino. It was the first of 412 appearances with the Rossoneri jersey in which he scored 3 times and won 4 Scudetti, 1 Latina Cup and 1 European Cup, the club’s first in 1963 at Wembley.

Cesare’s playing days with Milan came to an end in 1966, but just six years later he was back, and this time on the bench, guiding the side in the Cup Winners’ Cup versus Red Boys of Luxembourg in a 4-1 victory and with the great Nereo Rocco as technical director. As a true Milanista however Cesare also experienced the lows such as the defeat to Verona in 1974 and the club ushered in Giovanni Trapattoni for the remaining games of the season. But his bond to Milan was unbreakable and what’s more, there would be a second generation with his son Paolo following in his footsteps and enjoying unrivalled success at the club.

After his experience as Italy coach at the World Cup in France in 1998, Cesare returned to the Milan family as head scout and in March 2001 he took over from Alberto Zaccheroni for the closing stages of 2000-2001 season, overseeing the memorable 6-0 victory over Inter. There are also high hopes of a third generation as his grandson Christian is now back in form again after recent injuries and impressed at the recent Viareggio Cup, the prestigious youth tournament, with the Milan Primavera (U19s).

The club president Silvio Berlusconi and the rest of the club will always remember fondly his charisma, kindness and warm smile. The club sends its condolences to the Maldini family and the loss of such a key figure in Rossoneri history has left everyone at AC Milan moved and saddened.

AC MILAN MIHAJLOVIC:MUST DO MORE after losing against Atalanta

MILAN – This is what was said in the wake of the team’s 2-1 loss at Bergamo:

“I would like to pass on my condolences to the Maldini family first of all. He was above all a great man before a great player. Two points in four games in unacceptable. I apologise to the fans and I take the responsibility. We will now go into a training retreat until the situation improves. I warned the team that things had to go differently. We now have to look over our shoulders while up next we face Juve, but nothing can be taken for granted in football. We have to play with the right attitude. We are going into a training retreat to sort things out and try and find a solution. If after 31 rounds of the Serie A season I am still here saying the same things it means that there are weaknesses. There are clearly areas that even with training and commitment we’re struggling to improve. Up until today there has been no problem with our fitness. Atalanta prepared for the match better than us, but we had to prepare without a lot of international players which does also show the quality that this squad has. But if you don’t fight, you cannot win. We weren’t determined or spirited enough. Today’s match speaks for itself and it’s pointless repeating the same things. We were lucky to take the lead but we then should have stepped things up a gear and killed off the contest. We didn’t do that and it’s not the first time this season. Locatelli is a good player that has come from the youth sector. He is not yet ready for the pace and intensity of first team football. He does however have the intelligence and the abilities. We now have a duty to try and cut the gap to the sides ahead of us in the table and we cannot let the sides behind us catch us. We all have to show that we’re worthy of being at this club. At the end of the season we will assess the situation. While I am here, I will try and get the best out of this team and myself. Juventus are clearly stronger than us, but it doesn’t mean we cannot beat them. We will spend the next six days together preparing as best as possible for the match. We will then see what happens. We will be in a training lockdown until at least Saturday. The right attitude has to always be there. I think Kucka and Honda can recover in time for the Juve game.”

“I have an indelible memory of Cesare Maldini. I still remember when I went to Chiasso with friends to watch the 1963 European Cup final between Milan-Benfica. I was lucky to see him lift the first European Cup won by an Italian side. He was a legendary figure, from a legendary family. I sent Paolo Maldini a text message this morning and he replied saying how much Cesare Maldini was close to the club. My response was that he was Milan. Cesare is the history of Milan. But also the history of the Italian national side. He won three European Championships with the U21s and was assistant coach to Bearzot.  He was a great player and captain. I have a lot of memories of him. He made history with this club. I remember when we finished the 2000/2001 season with him as coach and the derby. His son followed in his footsteps and the fact that both of them lifted the European Cup to the English skies is something wonderful and incredible. He will always live long in our hearts.”

SINISA MIHAJLOVIC (to the Milan Channel)
“We were lacking today in terms of focus, determination and character. I don’t want to look for excuses for my players. We lost a match in which we should have done better. When you lose, it means something was missing. I take the blame for this because I am the coach. I am trying in all ways possible to resolve the situation. I take my responsibilities and I have never shied away from this. There aren’t many more games to go in the league. We will try and finish as high as possible in the table and win the TIM Cup. If we’re not able to turn things around, we won’t win any of the matches from now until the end of the season.”
