  Australia 1 – 0  Denmark
60′ Mathew Leckie

🏆👉 Australia won the FIFA World Cup Group D defeating Denmark on Wednesday 30 November 2022 at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar.  This is a superb victory because Australia got their pass to the Round of 16, thanks to Mathew Leckie’s goal in the 60th minute. Overall the Australians deserved the result. Great bitterness instead for Denmark. Australia will face the first of Group C in the Round of 16.

  •  Italian Serie A players called up in this game

🇩🇰 Denmark:   Simon Kjaer (Milan) listed as a substitute
Joakim Mæhle (Atalanta) played until the 70th minute and was replaced by Andreas Cornelius.

🇦🇺 Australia:  Fran Karacic (Brescia) listed as a substitute
Ajdin Hrustic (Hellas Verona) played from the 89th minute after replacing Mathew Leckie.

Australia opened the score in the 60th minute. Mathew Leckie defeated Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Riley McGree.

Stats before the game. This is the second meeting between Australia and Denmark at the World Cup, following a 1-1 draw in the group stage in 2018. Australia have won just one of their four games (D1 L2) against Denmark in all competitions – the 1-0 win in a June 2010 friendly. Australia have lost eight of their last 11 matches (W1 D2) against European sides at the World Cup, always conceding at least one goal in the run. At the same time, one of the three matches in which the Australians avoided defeat was against Denmark in 2018 (1-1). Denmark have not won in five matches (D4 L1) at the World Cup, or since the success against Peru, on matchday one, in 2018; moreover, following the defeat against France, the red and whites could lose back-to-back group stage matches for the first time in the competition.

🏆👉  France despite losing the FIFA World Cup game against Tunisia on Wednesday 30 December 2022 qualified for the Round of 16.  The surreal ending however does not erase Tunisia’s historic feat.    Imagine, France had the illusion of getting a draw in the 98th minute with Antoine Griezmann while the referee seems to blow his whistle, then a turnover.  The goal was ruled out after a VAR review because Antoine Griezmann is caught offside.   This is a historic victory for Tunisia over France, but which was not enough for Tunisia to overcome, for the first time in six participations, the first round of a World Championship. Tunisia had only one result available against France, precisely the success, but what blocked their way to the round of 16 of Qatar 2022 was the simultaneous victory of Australia against Denmark.

What was played in Al Rayyan was, against all odds, a one-way game for long stretches or almost. In fact, Tunisia took over the reins of the game from the first minutes and left them only in the final, when the energies failed and the transalpines really started to push on the accelerator.

  •  Italian Serie A players called up in this game

🇫🇷 France:  Theo Hernández (Milan) listed as a substitute
Adrien Rabiot (Juventus) played from the 63rd minute replacing Jordan Veretout
Olivier Giroud (Milan) listed as a substitute

 Tunisia:  None

Tunisia opened the score in the 58th minute. Wahbi Khazri defeated France goalkeeper Steve Mandanda with a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Aïssa Laïdouni.

✅   Stats before the game: France have never lost in the previous four (W2, D2) played against Tunisia; this will be the first meeting between the two teams since May 2010 (1-1). France have alternated between winning and losing in the five games they played against African internationals at the World Cup, beating Nigeria 2-0 in the last of those games, in 2014. Tunisia has yet to win this World Cup (D1, L1); if not successful, the African team will have not achieved a single victory in four of their six participations in the competition (the other three in 1998, 2002 and 2006), nor will they have ever made it past the group stage of the tournament in the World Cup. Tunisia have not yet found the goal, despite having made 27 shots in the two matches of this World Cup. The African team – in their sixth participation in the competition – has never played an entire edition of the tournament without ever clocking in.

🏆👉Lineup TUNISIA (3-4-3): Dahmen; Ghandri, Talbi, Meriah; Maaloul, Skhiri, Laidouni, Khecrida; Khazri, Bel Rhomdane, Slimane.

🏆👉 Lineup FRANCIA (4-3-3): Mandanda; Disasi, Varane, Konaté, Fofana; Tchouameni, Camavinga, Guendouzi; Kolo Muani, Veretout, Coman.

Stats before the game. This is the first meeting between Iran and the United States in any competition since January 2000, with the two teams drawing 1-1 in a friendly match in California.  Iran beat the United States 2-1 in the sides’ only previous match at the World Cup, with that win leading to the United States’ elimination from the 1998 World Cup in France. The United States have lost their third group stage match in seven of their eight World Cup appearances under this format, with the exception of a 1-0 win against Algeria in 2010. After a 2-0 win against Wales, Iran are aiming to win two games in a single World Cup for the first time. One of their previous three victories was against the United States in 1998. The United States have won two of their last 14 World Cup games (D6 L6), drawing both games this season. They have never drawn three in a row at the World Cup. Five of Iran’s last six World Cup goals have come after the 90th minute, including three out of four in this year’s tournament. Two goals in 2022 came after the 100th minute: Mehdi Taremi’s penalty against England (102:30) and Ramin Rezaeian’s marking against Wales (100:37).
