Napoli has claimed the Scudetto, becoming the champions of Italy!!
Napoli defeated Cagliari in the Serie A Week 38 match on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy. Napoli secure their 4th Scudetto in history, following their victories in the 1986/87, 1989/90, and 2022/23 seasons. Up to now, no team from central-southern Italy has won the tricolor more than three times (Roma has also won three). Napoli just needs to win this game to claim the Scudetto, reaching a total of 82 points.
In the past 15 Serie A seasons (from 2010/11), this marks just the second occasion that the Scudetto will be decided on the final matchday, following the 2021/22 season when AC Milan triumphed. Napoli claimed the Scudetto for 2024-2025!
McTominay’s stunning overhead kick in the 42nd minute, along with Romelu Lukaku’s physical prowess in the 51st minute, secured a 2-0 victory over Cagliari, bringing immense joy to the entire nation: the Scudetto. Today’s achievement is a testament to the efforts of Aurelio De Laurentiis and Manna, who, after finishing in tenth place last year, successfully rebuilt a competitive team. They added two crucial players McTominay, a winning intuition and a standout revelation of the championship, and Lukaku, a vital figure for Conte, who contributed 14 goals and 10 assists in the league, compensating for the significant departures of Victor Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia in January.
Most importantly, this victory marks a triumph for Antonio Conte: his fifth Scudetto in Italy, following three with Juve and one with Inter, achieved in Naples by defying the odds and expectations set at the beginning of the season. Conte has proven to be an exceptional leader, a master of tactics and communication, a focal point, and an undeniable leader from whom both fans and the team drew their best. He and the team accomplished a historic feat just two years after securing their third Scudetto. Today, Naples continues to dream.
“Avanti scugnizzi” along with a massive poster, this is the atmosphere selected by Napoli supporters. Prior to the game, there was a moment of silence dedicated to Nino Benvenuti.

The game …
Napoli gained the advantage in the 42nd minute. Scott McTominay scored with a right-footed shot to the center. The assist came from Matteo Politano. Napoli opened the scoring with a spectacular overhead kick goal by McTominay, who executed an acrobatic move on a cross from Politano that goalkeeper Alen Sherri couldn’t stop. The crowd erupted at the Maradona.

Napoli is celebrating a goal in the 51st minute. Romelu Lukaku found the net with a left-footed shot aimed at the bottom right corner. The assist came from Amir Rrahmani. What an incredible goal by Lukaku! He begins with a long throw from the defense, stands strong against Mina, pushes past the Cagliari defenders, and then delivers a precise flat shot past Sherri. Maradona erupts with joy.

In the 76th minute, Romelu Lukaku leaves the field to a round of applause and is substituted by Giovanni “El Cholito” Simeone. A well-deserved ovation for Lukaku!
✅ Stats before the game:
Following their impressive victory in the first leg (4-0 on 15 September), Napoli has the chance to secure wins in both of their seasonal encounters against Cagliari in Serie A for the first time since the 2018/19 season, when Carlo Ancelotti was at the helm. The last three encounters between Napoli and Cagliari that took place in the latter half of the Serie A season have all concluded in a tie (each with a score of 1-1), including the latest match on 25 February 2024, where Zito Luvumbo scored in the 96th minute after Victor Osimhen had put Napoli ahead in the 65th minute.
Napoli has triumphed in nine out of their last 12 home games against Cagliari in Serie A (D2, L1), netting a total of 30 goals during this stretch (averaging 2.5 goals per match) – six of these matches have occurred since matchday 30 (W5, D1 for the Neapolitans).

As they head into their final match, Cagliari has matched their total points from the previous championship season (36). Unfortunately, the Sardinians have suffered defeats in both of their games in this tournament against the team that was leading the table at the start of the day (0-1 against Atalanta on December 14, 2024, and 1-3 against Inter on April 12).
Napoli has netted 57 goals in this championship: throughout the history of the 20-team Serie A. The team that won the Scudetto with the fewest goals was Milan in the 2010/11 season, finishing with 65 goals in total.
Napoli could potentially become the third distinct team under Antonio Conte’s leadership to clinch the Scudetto. No coach in Serie A’s history (since the 1929/30 season) has ever achieved this feat with three different clubs (Fabio Capello’s titles in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons with Juventus are not included).
Player Stats
Romelu Lukaku made his debut as a starter for Napoli in Serie A during the first leg against Cagliari on September 15. In that match, the Belgian player scored one goal and provided two assists, contributing to a 4-0 victory. Lukaku, in 2025, he has been involved in nine goals during home matches (5 goals and 4 assists), setting a record for this period in Serie A, with Scott McTominay following closely behind with seven contributions (5 goals and 2 assists).
In the most recent round against Venezia, Roberto Piccoli achieved double-digit goals. Among the forwards in the top five European leagues for the 2024/25 season who have scored at least 10 goals, only Patrik Schick (21 goals, 0 assists) and Kike García (13 goals, 0 assists) have fewer assists than Piccoli, who has managed just one assist.
