Genoa and Cagliari wrapped up Serie A Week 13 with an exciting draw on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa, Italy. Frendrup and Miretti found the net for the home side, while Marin and Piccoli converted penalties for the visitors. Both teams now sit on 11 points in the standings, temporarily surpassing Como, who remain at 10 points.
Genoa has only +1 point above Cagliari. Genoa has had a strong record against Cagliari, winning six out of their last seven encounters in Serie A, with one draw, and managing to keep five clean sheets during that stretch.
The beginning of the match…
Cagliari got off to a great start, taking the lead in the 8th minute. The referee, Sozza, awarded a penalty to Cagliari after Morten Thorsby committed a handball in the box. Razvan Marin stepped up and confidently converted the penalty with a right-footed shot straight down the middle, leaving Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali with no chance as he dove to the left.

Genoa quickly responded and leveled the score in the 12th minute. Morten Frendrup found the back of the net with a left-footed shot aimed at the bottom right corner. The play began with a long throw-in from Zanoli on the right side, where Pinamonti couldn’t connect with a header in the center. Mina deflected the ball, allowing Frendrup to strike from the penalty spot, sending it into the net on the right.

Cagliari has struggled in their recent away games against Genoa, failing to secure a win in their last eight Serie A visits (with one draw and seven losses), and they haven’t scored in their last four matches at this venue.
Their last away victory against Genoa in this competition was on April 19, 2014, when they came from behind to win 2-1, thanks to goals from Marco Sau and Víctor Ibarbo after Sebastien De Maio had initially put Genoa ahead. Genoa (7G: 4D, 3L) is one of the two teams, alongside Monza, that has struggled to secure a home victory in this Serie A season.
In fact, the Grifone has only experienced this lack of success in their first eight home matches twice before, during the 2017/18 and 2021/22 seasons. Meanwhile, Cagliari has faced a tough time defensively, allowing at least two goals in each of their last five league matches.
Player Stats
Davide Nicola, currently at 199 games as a coach in the top division, will become the fifth coach in the entire history of Serie A next matchday to have had at least 13 games as a coach with eight different teams in the competition, after Carlo Mazzone (10), Alberto Malesani (9), Luigi Delneri (9) and Claudio Ranieri (8).
Andrea Pinamonti has been involved in five of the nine goals scored by Genoa in this championship (four goals and one assist), including the four most recent for the rossoblù in the competition. The 1999-born player is the player who has been directly involved in the most goals for his team in the current tournament: 56%, five of the nine total scored by the Grifone.
Roberto Piccoli is the Italian player born from 2001 onwards to have scored the most goals in Serie A; 15, nine of which came from the 80th minute onwards, that is 60%: the highest percentage among the players who have scored at least that many goals in the competition.
