Cagliari Calcio making the official announcement on Monday 3 August 2020 that Eusebio Di Francesco is the new coach replacing Walter Zenga.   Cagliari sacked Zenga on Sunday 2 August 2020.   Di Francesco signing an agreement with Cagliari until 30 June 2022.

Di Francesco was born in Pescara, Italy on 8 September 1969, as a footballer he played with Empoli, with which he made his Serie A debut at the age of 18, Lucchese, Piacenza, Ancona, and Perugia. Di Francesco was Italian champion with AS Roma in 2001, he made 14 appearances and one goal with the senior national team.

Di Francesco’s coaching career began in Abruzzo: first in Lanciano and then in Pescara where in 2010, after reaching the play-offs, he won promotion to Serie B. He will leave the blue-and-whites after an excellent cadet championship, landing in Serie A at the helm of Lecce. In June 2012 the long and profitable experience with Sassuolo begins. Five seasons that will highlight Di Francesco and his team as one of the youngest, brightest and most proactive players in Italian football: from the historic promotion to Serie A in 2013 to the surprising qualification for the 2016-17 Europa League.

Results and performances that will bring him back to the capital: in his first season in the Giallorossi he finishes third in the championship, qualifying in the Champions League. The following year he is the architect of an exciting journey in the competition, even touching the final after the sensational comeback against Barcelona and the electrifying semi-final against Liverpool. The last experience on the bench is at the helm of Sampdoria in the past season.

Cagliari Calcio announces the termination of the contractual relationship with Mr. Walter Zenga on Sunday 2 August 2020.

Arriving in Cagliari last March, Zenga led the first team with competence and passion in one of the most anomalous and complicated phases of our football. With Zenga on the bench, the team collected 13 points and achieved mathematical safety four days in advance.

In managing the group he has been able to enhance the young people of the rossoblù, allowing some of them to fulfill their dream of making their Serie A debut.
