Empoli ended the Serie A Week 22 match against Bologna with a draw on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Carlo Castellani Stadium in Empoli, Italy. Empoli now has 21 points, while Bologna sits at 34 points, maintaining their 6th place in the European zone.

All the action took place in the first half: Colombo opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a cross from Pezzella, but Dominguez equalized just before halftime with a volley assisted by Lykogiannis. In the second half, Odgaard (73′) and Beukema (80′) had opportunities to score. In the upcoming round, Empoli will travel to face Juventus, while Bologna will host Como at home.

This will be the 22nd encounter between Empoli and Bologna in Serie A, with the history showing eight draws, seven wins for the Azzurri, and six victories for the Rossoblu.

This marks the sixth meeting between coaches Roberto D’Aversa and Vincenzo Italiano. So far, they have each secured one victory and there have been three draws. D’Aversa’s notable win was a 3-2 triumph while managing Lecce against Fiorentina on February 2. Interestingly, both teams have found the back of the net in all five previous encounters.

The start of the game…

Empoli opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Lorenzo Colombo found the back of the net with a close-range right-footed shot, beating Bologna’s goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski. The goal was set up by Giuseppe Pezzella, who delivered a cross following a play initiated by Fazzini. Colombo managed to score just a few steps from the goal, getting ahead of both Lucumi and Skorupski.

Bologna brought the score to 1-1 in the 45th minute. Benjamín Domínguez found the back of the net with a right-footed shot aimed at the center, getting the better of Empoli’s goalkeeper, Devis Vásquez. The setup came from Charalampos Lykogiannis, who delivered a perfect cross into the box, allowing Domínguez to skillfully volley it past Vásquez.

Stats before the game

Bologna has not lost in their last three Serie A encounters with Empoli, recording two wins and one draw. Historically, the Rossoblu have had a strong record against Empoli, remaining unbeaten in the first seven matches they played against them, with three wins and four draws. When it comes to home games in Serie A, Empoli has the best record against Bologna, suffering only a 10% defeat rate. This is based on five victories and four draws from ten home matches, although their most recent clash ended in a narrow 0-1 loss on March 15, thanks to a last-minute goal from Fabbian.

Empoli has struggled recently, suffering five losses in their last six Serie A matches, with only one draw to show for it. This equals the number of defeats they experienced in their previous 19 top-flight games, where they managed five wins and nine draws.

Since matchday 16, the Tuscan side has earned the least points in the league, managing just a single point. Additionally, Empoli has lost their last three home games in Serie A and is at risk of making history by losing four consecutive matches at home for the first time ever in the top flight.

Bologna celebrated a 3-1 win against Monza in their latest match, which has allowed them to achieve a new record for points after the first 20 games of a Serie A season since 1994/95, totaling 33 points—one more than they had at the same stage last year. With three points awarded for a win, the last time the rossoblù surpassed this mark after 21 games in a single top-flight season was in 1966/67, when they finished third.

So far in this championship, Bologna has netted 32 goals, and the last time they scored more than this after 21 matches was in the 1965/66 season, when they hit 36 goals.
