Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
AS Roma, 10th position with 23 points and a positive goal difference of +2
Bologna, 8th position with 28 points and a positive goal difference of +4

Roma faced a disappointing draw against Bologna in their Serie A Week 20 match on Sunday, January 12, 2025, held at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium in Bologna, Italy. This result does little to benefit either team, as Roma remains stagnant in the standings with 24 points, sitting in 10th place, while Bologna climbs to 29 points, holding onto 7th place.

The second half brought all the action after a lackluster first half. The game remained scoreless until the 58th minute when Roma finally found the net, only for Bologna to respond quickly, scoring twice in just four minutes. Both teams were awarded penalties for handballs, and each converted their chances.

The match concluded with a 2-2 draw, featuring goals from Saelemaekers in the 58th minute, Dallinga in the 61st, Ferguson in the 65th, and Dovbyk in the 98th minute. Looking ahead, Roma will take on Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico in their next match, while Bologna is set to face Inter at San Siro under the management of Simone Inzaghi.

Surprisingly, Bologna holds a slight edge with a +5 point lead over Roma! The spotlight is on Roma to begin their ascent in the standings.

Roma gained the upper hand in the 51st minute when Alexis Saelemaekers found the back of the net with a left-footed shot aimed at the center. The goal was set up by Manu Koné, who made a brilliant pass to Saelemaekers on the right side. After a fantastic play by the Giallorossi, the Belgian player moved into the center and aimed for the far post. Unfortunately for Bologna’s goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski, mishandled the rebound, allowing the ball to bounce into the net and put Roma ahead.

Bologna quickly levels the score in the 61st minute! It was a fantastic counterattack, with Dominguez sprinting the length of the pitch while dribbling the ball. He then passed it to Odgaard, who sent it to the far post, where Dallinga was waiting to finish with a right-footed shot!

Bologna turned the game around in the 65th minute when Lewis Ferguson scored a penalty with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. The penalty was awarded after Lorenzo Pellegrini fouled Jens Odgaard in the box. The goalkeeper dove to the left, but the ball went to the right.

What an exciting finish! In the 98th minute, a PENALTY FOR ROMA!! After reviewing the play on the monitor, Referee Rosario Abisso awarded the penalty for Lucumì’s handball. Dovbyk stepped up and scored, sending Skorupski the wrong way! Just as he finished, Abisso blew the final whistle.

✅  Stats before the game

Bologna has achieved the most victories in Serie A against Roma, with a total of 54 wins out of 153 encounters (D45 L54). This is at least six more wins than they have against any other team in the league. Recently, Bologna has triumphed in their last three league matches against Roma, scoring a combined 8-3.

The last time Bologna had a longer winning streak against the Giallorossi in Serie A was between October 1958 and January 1961, when they won five consecutive matches under the management of Alfredo Foni and later Federico Allasio. For the third consecutive time, Bologna enters a match against Roma positioned higher in the standings, a scenario that had only occurred once in the previous 21 meetings between these two teams.

Following a 2-3 defeat to Hellas Verona in their last match of 2024, Bologna faces the possibility of losing two Serie A games back-to-back for the first time since January 2023. However, at home, the Rossoblu have managed to avoid two consecutive losses since the stretch between December 2021 and January 2022, when they experienced a three-game losing streak. Bologna hasn’t won their opening match of a calendar year in January since 2016, when they triumphed 1-0 at San Siro against Milan. Since then, the Emilian side has recorded four draws and four losses in such matches, including a 1-0 defeat to Roma on January 4, 2023, at the Olimpico.

On the other hand, Roma has secured three victories in their last five league matches (1 draw, 1 loss), matching their total from the previous 15 Serie A games (3 wins, 4 draws, 8 losses). They are aiming for back-to-back league wins for the first time since last September, when they defeated Udinese and Venezia. However, Roma has struggled away from home, remaining winless in their last 12 Serie A away games (6 draws, 6 losses). This marks their longest winless streak on the road since the period from April 1998 to March 1999, when Zdenek Zeman was the coach, during which they went 15 matches without a win (7 draws, 8 losses).
