✅ Stats before the game: Belgium and Romania will meet for the first time in one of the major international tournaments (World Cup/European Championship). This will be the first meeting between the two teams since the friendly in Bucharest in November 2012 – 2-1 for Romania in that case. The balance sheet between Belgium and Romania is so far in perfect balance with five wins each and two draws. In the most recent period, Belgium have won just one of five matches against these opponents (D1 L3) – 2-1 in a friendly in Liège in November 2011. Belgium could lose its first two matches of a European Championship for the first time. The last time this generally happened in a major tournament dates back to 1930, in the first edition of the World Cup. After the 3-0 victory in the first round, Romania could win two matches in the same major tournament (World Cup + EURO) for the third time, after 1994 (3 wins) and 1998 (2 wins), in both cases in the World Cup. After a run of 13 wins in 14 games (L1) in the group stage at major tournaments (World Cup + EURO), Belgium have since gone three games in a row at this stage (D1, L2): this has not happened from the four consecutive matches played between EURO 2000 and the 2002 World Cup (2N, 2L). In the first round against Ukraine (3-0), Romania achieved its largest victory ever in a major tournament (World Cup + EURO); against Ukraine, moreover, it was the second time that Romania scored at least three goals in a European Championship, out of six total editions in which it took part (at EURO 2000 it scored four goals in one match).
