Wojciech Szczesny: We need to win these games if we’re to challenge for the title

Wojciech Szczesny insists that Roma need to be beating teams like Verona if they are to mount a serious title challenge this season.

The Polish shotstopper, who pulled off a couple of key saves in his competitive debut for Roma at the Bentegodi, feels that while there were positive to take from tonight’s 1-1 draw there is also most certainly room for improvement.

How do you think the team played today?
“I don’t think it was our best game. We’re disappointed with the result because we want to challenge for the Scudetto this year and we have to be winning this kind of game. There’s a lot of room for improvement but I’m sure it will be better next week.”

Roma probably played better in the second half after Jankovic scored.
“Yes, we needed to score so we opened up more and created some good chances. We were unlucky not to score towards the end. That’s a positive but we have to take those chances and, as I said before, win these kinds of games.”

Do you think it was a fair result?
“I think we created more chances and I’d have been happier with a win but credit  to Verona. I think they played a good game defensively. Their goalkeeper had a very good game and they will probably think they deserved it.”

How are you finding playing with your new team-mates, and the defenders in particular?
“It keeps getting better. Our understanding is growing with every game. I don’t think we looked too bad defensively today. I enjoy playing with them, we have a good relationship and hopefully we can win things together.”
