Wojciech Szczesny: “Pleased to make debut despite the result”

Wojciech Szczesny made his Roma debut tonight just a few days after joining the club on loan from Arsenal. The Polish goalie, who played the second half against Sporting CP at the Estadio José Alvalade, was disappointed to lose but nonetheless delighted to get his first run-out for the Giallorossi.

It was a positive performance from Szczesny, who pulled of a number of good saves during his spell on the pitch. After the match, we caught up with the stopper for his thoughts on the match.

Wojciech, give us your reaction to your Roma debut.
“It’s good to have my first game under the belt, it was a good experience. I’ve had a really good week of training with the boys, there’s a fantastic group of players here. Obviously we must set the standard higher for ourselves because when you play for a big club there are no friendly games and you have to win. So the result is really bad tonight.”

How was your first experience of playing with your new defense?
“It’s not good because we lost but we try to talk to each other every day in training in order to learn our game and get to know each other.”

How are you dealing with the language barrier?
“I’m trying to learn Italian, I’ve had a week of lessons every day and I’m making progress. I try to speak with them obviously. Some of the guys speak good English too. If you give us a few weeks, the connection and the understanding between us will be good.”

How are you getting on with Rudi Garcia?
“He’s a great coach. I’ve only trained with him for a week but he’s a good guy with a great personality. He takes charge of the group – he’s a leader.”
