🏆👉 AS Roma beat FC Porto in the UEFA Europa League Knockout Playoff Second Leg on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy. The first match in Porto ended in a 1-1 stalemate.  The aggregate result is 4-3. Mission accomplished for Roma as they move on to the round of 16, turning the tables on Porto with a brilliant brace from Paulo Dybala. Porto was reduced to ten men after Eustaquio’s red card, and while Aghehowa nearly equalized by hitting the post, it was Pisilli’s goal in the 83rd minute that confirmed their spot in the next round. Rensch’s own goal in stoppage time didn’t change the outcome, and the final whistle sparked a joyous celebration at the Olimpico.

FC Porto opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Samu Aghehowa found the back of the net with a right-footed shot aimed at the top left corner. The assist came from Fábio Vieira’s header. Goalkeeper Svilar failed to connect with Paredes at the edge of the Giallorossi box. After a long-range attempt from Fabio Vieira, Aghehowa sealed the goal with a stunning overhead kick that left the Giallorossi keeper helpless.

Roma leveled the match in the 35th minute when Paulo Dybala, the Argentine forward, found the net with a left-footed shot aimed at the bottom left corner. Eldor Shomurodov provided the assist, passing the ball to Dybala, who then skillfully beat Diogo Costa from close range. The Olimpico erupted with joy as the equalizer hit the back of the net.

Roma turned the game around in the 39th minute, and who else but Paulo Dybala found the net once more! Dybala struck with a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner, thanks to a brilliant assist from Manu Koné. Koné delivered a precise pass to the Argentine, who skillfully beat Diogo Costa at the near post. Roma takes the lead!

In the 51st minute, Porto is left with just 10 players. Referee Letexier shows Eustaquio a red card after checking the footage on the monitor! Paredes is on the ground following a collision with Eustaquio, who had the ball well out of reach. Letexier heads to the monitor to take a closer look at Eustaquio’s challenge on Paredes.

What a moment! In the 83rd minute, Niccolò Pisilli netted a brilliant right-footed shot to the high center of the goal. Angeliño was the one who assisted him. Dybala opened up the play on the left for Angeliño, who then looked up and delivered a low, fast cross to Pisilli, allowing the young Giallorossi to score with ease. The Giallorossi are now on the verge of reaching the eighth finals!

Stats before the game

The last time Roma faced Porto in a European competition was in February 2019. The Giallorossi triumphed with a 2-1 victory, thanks to two goals from Nicolò Zaniolo. Porto has only lost once in their last seven encounters with Roma across all European tournaments (3 wins, 3 draws), having eliminated the Italian side in all three previous knockout rounds (the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1981-82, the qualifying round of the 2016-17 Champions League, and the round of 16 in the 2018-19 Champions League). Roma has been impressive at home in the Europa League. Roma winning 13 of their last 16 matches (2 draws, 1 loss), including their last three without conceding a single goal. Under Claudio Ranieri, they secured five victories out of six home games in this competition. Their only defeat occurring in the knockout stage against Panathinaikos in February 2010.

Roma is back from three clean sheet in a row at home in the Europa League and has undergone only one goal at the Olimpico in the competition this season. No team has done better in internal races during the championship phase – a goal collected also for Athletic Bilbao, Elfsborg and Olympiakos.

Porto passed the turn only in three of the nine previous occasions in which he drew at home in the first leg of a double direct elimination challenge in the main European competitions, even if one of these was the most recent against Eintracht Frankfurt in the sixteenth century of the 2013-14 Europa League.

Roma received seven cards (six yellow and one red) in the first leg against Porto. No team in this edition of the Europa League has undergone more penalties in a single game.  In particular, it was from the final of May 31, 2023, lost against Seville, that the Giallorossi did not collect so many cards in the competition.
