Radja Nainggolan is one happy man after inking a new five-year contract with AS Roma today. The Belgian international, who joined the Giallorossi from Cagliari in January 2014, was one of Serie A’s standout performers last term and named Player of the Season in a fan poll run by asroma.it. He told us he was “delighted” when we met with him for a chat immediately after he put pen to paper on his new deal.
Radja, this is an important day for you and Roma. How do you feel?
“I’m delighted – this is what I wanted. I think the club is happy too. We both took a step towards each other and we found the best solution for all parties.”
Today is your first day back in training. What’s it like coming back here?
“Every time you start a new season you have to draw a line under the previous campaign and try to go one better. We’ve come back nice and relaxed but we’re here to work. We need to focus on building up our fitness so that we can go out there and win something next year.”
On the subject of next year, Leandro Castan and Kevin Strootman will be soon available again – two big additions for Roma.
“Definitely. I’m really pleased for both of them. Castan had a very unusual injury and it was hard to know how it was going to turn out. He’s getting close to 100% again now and everyone on the team is delighted for him. Having Leo back will be a massive bonus. Kevin was unlucky because he injured the same knee twice but he’s on the road to recovery as well now. It’s great to see the two of them so eager to get back out there on the pitch and help us.”
Roma are about to set off for Australia then afterwards you’ll be heading to Indonesia. I guess that will be a bit special for you?
“It will, yes. Indonesia is a wonderful country. I have lots of fans there and Roma do too. I’m sure it will be a wonderful experience for all concerned and nice for me personally to go back to my roots.”
Last thing. What do you want to say to the fans after this renewal? What are your targets?
“I’m delighted to have extended my stay at this club. I’ll do everything I can for this shirt to repay Roma for the faith they’ve shown in me. My aims for this year? I hope to finally win the Scudetto or if not at least another trophy.”
