Roma were forced to settle for a point as late heroics by Verona keeper Rafael denied the Giallorossi a winning start to the 2015-16 Serie A campaign.

Alessandro Florenzi struck an absolute belter to level things up after Bosko Jankovic had opened the scoring but despite the inclusion of summer signings Wojciech Szczesny, Mohamed Salah and Edin Džeko, Rudi Garcia’s men were unable to get that all-important second goal.

Salah, Radja Nainggolan and Gervinho all had chances in the first half yet it was Jankovic who went closest to breaking the deadlock when his header was cleared off the line by Daniele De Rossi.

After the restart, Kostas Manolas and Dzeko both went close from corners before Emil Hallfredsson’s perfectly weighted crossfield pass picked out Jankovic’s run towards the far post and the Serbian volleyed past Szczesny to claim the first goal in Serie A 2015-16.

The Giallorossi weren’t behind for long though as five minutes later Alessandro Florenzi conjured up a real gem. Roaming forward from his right-back position, he smashed an angled strike across Rafael and into the net from 30 yards out.

Roma ended the game on the front foot as they probed for a winner and it took a phenomenal reaction save from Rafael to deny Miralem Pjanic late on. There was to be no late twist, however, and so the spoils were shared: Verona 1-1 Roma.
